CLEVELAND - Cavaliers centre AndersonVarejao is questionable for Tuesday nights game against New Orleans because of a knee injury. Bilal Powell . Varejao has a hyperextended and bruised left knee. He was hurt in the second half of Sundays loss to Phoenix and the Cavs say he will be fitted with a brace. Varejao has been slowed by a variety of injuries in recent years. He played in 44 games this season after being limited to 81 over the three previous seasons. Hes averaging 8.8 points and 10.3 rebounds. Also, CarrickFelix could miss eight weeks with a stress fracture in his left knee. The rookie swingman was injured in a D-League game. Felix, a second-round pick, has played six games for Cleveland this season. He has spent the season shuffling between Cleveland and the Canton Charge. Dennis Byrd .J. -- The New York Giants have signed quarterback RustySmith, who played the last four seasons with the Tennessee Titans. Tajh Boyd . Thorpe, who spent six seasons with the Alouettes between 2002 and 2007 before returning as the teams defensive coordinator last season, has also been appointed the teams assistant head coach. Dinwiddie, who broke into the CFL as a quarterback with the Alouettes in 2005, began his coaching career in 2013 with the Alouettes. The Toronto Argonauts Football Club re-signed veteran running back Jeff Johnson and cornerback Matt Black on Friday. Both Johnson and Black are Toronto natives. Johnson is a 12-year CFL veteran and has spent the last 10 seasons with the Argos. He is signed through the 2013 season. In 2011, the 34-year old carried 11 times for 23 yards and caught 12 passes for 82 yards; he also made 5 special teams tackles. "Im thrilled to continue this amazing run with the Double Blue," Johnson said in a statement. "This is an exciting time for the Argonauts organization and the required components for a run at the 100th Grey Cup at home are diligently being put into place. "It is an honour to be considered a vital part of the Double Blue machine and I look forward to the start of the 2012 campaaign. Curtis Martin. " Black was a 2008 Canadian Draft Pick by the Argonauts and is signed through 2014. The 26-year old led the Double Blue with 15 special teams tackles last season and scored his first career touchdown on an 81-yard punt return on July 29 in Edmonton. Black grew up in Toronto and starred at Northern Secondary School before a standout college career at Saginaw Valley State. "Im very happy to be back in Double Blue," he said. "Over the past three seasons, I have loved playing for my hometown team and look forward to the opportunities ahead of us. "2012 is going to be an exciting time to be an Argo and Im proud to say Ill be one!" Johnson and Black are two of nine GTA-born players the Argos had on the roster at the end of the 2011 season. You knew it was going to catch up to them but you just didnt know when. Dawan Landry . Im relating the reality of the slow starts in games by the Toronto Argonauts and how it had to stop as you cant always depend on fourth quarter comebacks and game-winning drives. The Argos have had an excellent year. At 9-4, they control the East and, unless they implode, should have the East Final at home. Thats a major advantage but they need Ricky Ray back. Zack Collaros has been entertaining and exciting and has established himself as a player in this league. But he is not Ricky Ray. Henry Burris completed his first seven passes and created an early lead. As important as it is to have come-from-behind skills, it is just as important to have create-a-lead skills and Ray has both. Getting a team ready to play is a process and takes a week. Why the Argos dont begin games better is a mystery but I do know what it takes: perfect preparation, emotional intensity and the combination of the two creates a unique and genuine level of focus. But the key factor is it has to be everybody; not just the starters but all 42 that dress for the game. In some ways, when the ball is kicked off, the vast majority of the work for coaches is over. But for the player, the important part has begun; seeing if your preparation and emotional intensity which creates your focus is there. This is by no means heavy psychological stuff, quite the opposite. It is easy to master if youre aware and make the effort over and over again. The Argos are a very good team that can be great if they would start games fast and hard and finish the same way. In Saskatchewan, it is a brand new season. The 31-17 win over the B.C. Lions breaks a four-game losing cycle and makes those four games complete history. And what is even more important is that it puts the Riders in second place and re-energizes the fact they still can host the 101st Grey Cup at home come November 24th. Im not sure about the trade. Patrick Neufeld is going to have a long career in CFL football but Alex Hall could be gone by next season. I know in other sports you "rent a player" for a block of time and it works but I am not sure it works in football. One is Canadian, one is American. There are countless football players of quality in the United States. In Canada, sometimes I think I can count them. I realize offensive line depth is a strength for Saskatchewan but Im still not sure who will win this deal as time moves on. The last two games on Saturday were painful to watch. Montreal took apart the Eskimos and Calgary did the same to the Blue Bombers. On the positive side, Mike Reilly played, survived and will play again. Im happy about that because the Montreal defence is intimidating. To me, Kyries Herbert and Chip Cox are the best two defensive players on the field at the same time on any team. You add Shea Emry and an excellent player in Mike Edem and the Alouettes can steal playoff games because of the hitting ability on that side of the field alone. The Calgary Stampeder are a complete team. In just about ever aspect of football, Calgary is as good or better than any team. One of their least recognized performers is kicker Rene Paredes. He has made almost every field goal that you can make and by doing so, either wins the close games or keeps the games close. You cant underrate his value. Lets be honest, with four games left in the regular season, Winnipeg and Edmonton are building for 2014. I realize it is not over until its over mathematically but the lack of energy expressed by both teams on Saturday was distressing. Not all players but for some, it came accross as a practice game, not a regular season battle. With four games left, teams are looking to host at least one game at home in the playoffs. During the regular season, home field is not as big an advantage as you might think. It is an advantage, but in an eight-team league, its not always a game-changer. In the playoffs? Oh yes! In the West, first place is no guarantee but the energy of playing at home in the Semi-Final, Final or Grey Cup Game is a feeling you never forget. The next four games mean everything to give yourself the best possible chance to win it all. Jaiquawn Jarrett . -- Former California coach Jeff Tedford has been hired as offensive co-ordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Dee Milliner .ca presents its latest weekly power rankings for the 2013-14 Barclays Premier League season.Baseball season is just around the corner and TSN.ca has you covered for whos in, whos out and what to expect from all 30 teams. Today, TSN Blue Jays reporter Scott MacArthur answers the key questions facing the 2014 Toronto Blue Jays and how they stack up in the always competitive American League East. GM: Alex Anthopoulos Manager: John Gibbons 2013: 74-88 5th in AL East, Did not qualify for playoffs QUESTION: What is the answer to the Blue Jays starting rotation problems? MacARTHUR: Cross your fingers. This is a starting rotation that could pleasantly surprise. If it falters, well, that would lead some to conclude that it simply met expectations. If we work off the assumption that we generally know what the Jays will get from R.A.Dickey and MarkBuehrle (double-digit victories, ERAs on either side of 4.00 and more than 200 innings each,) then BrandonMorrow and DrewHutchison become the keys to this whole thing. Morrow, 29, is healthy after missing the final four months of last season with an entrapped radial nerve in his right forearm. He has never pitched 180 innings in a single season (he did come close in 2011 when he threw a career-high 179 1/3 innings) and is out to prove he can stay healthy and be effective. Win totals arent always an accurate reflection of a pitchers season but the Jays need Morrow to swallow up 15 to 18 victories. If nothing else, the win total reflects that the pitcher went deep into enough ballgames to factor in to the result. Morrow is potentially in a contract year. The Blue Jays hold a $10-million option on his services for 2015. Hutchison, 23, was Torontos best pitcher in the Grapefruit League. He underwent Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery in July, 2012, and threw 35 1/3 innings late last season in the minor leagues. The Jays, however, insist the gloves are off and Hutchison will not be subject to an innings limit this year. The right-hander is a control pitcher and routinely was clocked with a fastball in the low-to-mid 90s this spring. More importantly, Hutchison was painting both corners and was keeping hitters off-balance with his changeup. Take this whichever way you will, but if were talking in September about Hutchison having been the Jays best starting pitcher in 2014, I wouldnt be surprised. Thats a good thing if he turns out to be the ace of a surprisingly strong staff. Thats a not so good thing if Hutchison goes through the typical ups and downs of a young pitcher while the rest of the rotation implodes around him. Regardless, Hutchisons future is bright. Aside from his stuff and his command, the Blue Jays salivate over his mound presence and his desire not just to pitch in the big leagues, but to be a dependable, dominant staff ace. You can look at the addition of DustinMcGowan to the rotation two ways and both are accurate. From a personal perspective, McGowans perseverance through multiple shoulder surgeries and various other ailments is to be commended and celebrated. He was a trustworthy arm in 25 appearances out of the bullpen last year and when, in September, he expressed an interest in stretching out to become a starter once more, people looked at one another puzzled. What could he possibly be thinking? Well, at least to this point, hes proven this doubter wrong and good for him. Can he stay healthy? Who knows. Only time will tell. From a club perspective, McGowan is the best option, which reflects poorly on J.A.Happ, who will begin the season on the disabled list with a bad back and who pitched poorly in four spring games. Happ, essentially, pitched himself out of the rotation. EsmilRogers, who cannot throw strikes consistently enough to be a starter and ToddRedmond, a strike-thrower who struggles the second time through an oppositions lineup, are better suited to the bullpen. MarcusStroman and AaronSanchez will begin their seasons at Triple-A Buffalo and Double-A New Hampshire, respectively. Both need more seasoning before they join Hutchison in what could be a potent starting rotation for years to come. Dont be surprised if both Stroman and Sanchez make their big league debuts this year. Both are more than capable of making spot starts in case of injury or the poor performance of others. General manager Alex Anthopoulos didnt secure external starting pitching help, either via free agency or via trade, and is left with some uncertainty at the back end of his rotation as a result.Jacoby Ford. QUESTION: Does Alex Anthopoulos take the blame if this season is a failure? MacARTHUR: Yes, Anthopoulos will take some blame if this season is a failure, as he should. So should manager John Gibbons. So should the players. So should everybody in the organization. Will Anthopoulos be fired? The heat is getting turned up on the general manager, who took significant risks when making the blockbuster trades with the Miami Marlins and the New York Mets last offseason. Those deals represented a sudden change in course, ushering in a "win now" mentality instead of the previous plan to draft, develop and patiently cultivate talent. If Toronto has another down year, the club will have to determine whether it can win with a nucleus of JoseBautista and EdwinEncarnacion. Both are elite sluggers on team-friendly tickets, possibly through 2016, and could fetch significant return. Should Anthopoulos be fired, it will be interesting to see which direction the club takes. Anthopoulos was a lieutenant of former general manager J.P. Ricciardi and there are people who work for Anthopoulos who date back to the Ricciardi days. It could be time for the Blue Jays to fundamentally reset the baseball operations department by bringing in an outsider. QUESTION: Is this the final season of the championship window? MacARTHUR: This is a tough question to answer because, after last season, it feels like the window either never existed or was bolted shut. The strange thing, despite whats been sold in these parts over the last 15 months, is that the future of the starting rotation (DrewHutchison, MarcusStroman, AaronSanchez) seems to be much brighter than the present. Maybe the so-called "championship window" is down the road a little bit. The Blue Jays have shopped high-priced talent like MarkBuehrle in the past. Theyd be open to moving him again if the season goes bust, although its a difficult proposition considering Buehrle is owed $18-million this year and $19-million next season, the heavily back-loaded years of the contract he signed with the Marlins. R.A.Dickey is locked in at $12-million per for this year and next. He has a club option for the same amount in 2016. Hes being paid to be the ace. Would another club be willing to take on the money for an almost 40-year-old who throws an unpredictable pitch? Offensively, with good health the Blue Jays should score their share of runs. They wont be a station to station ballclub; dont look for a lot of stolen bases. It will be up to JoseBautista and EdwinEncarnacion to combine for 75 home runs and for ColbyRasmus, in a contract year, to repeat the .840 OPS he posted last season while cutting down on the strike outs. BrettLawrie, now 24, is showing signs of maturity at the plate. Hes devoted himself to studying video of opposing pitchers with Encarnacion. I believe the Blue Jays will be a better team this season. However, I also believe the Tampa Bay Rays and the defending world champion Boston Red Sox remain the two best teams in the division. The Baltimore Orioles have a potent offence but are dealing with questions in their starting rotation. The New York Yankees retooled after missing the playoffs for only the second time in 19 seasons but theyre dealing with health concerns of their own namely DerekJeter (how he bounces back from a serious ankle injury,) MarkTeixeira (recovering from a torn tendon sheath in his wrist) and CCSabathia (had elbow problems last season; his fastball has topped out at 91 miles per hour this spring.) Typically, I dont like predicting because there are too many variables. Ill go so far as to say I think Rays starting pitching will catapult them to the American League East crown this year. The Red Sox will finish second in the division and win a wild card spot. That leaves the Blue Jays, Orioles and Yankees to finish in spots three to five. The order is anyones guess. (SportsNetwork. Bills Jersey .com) - Just when the sun brightens a bit for the Vancouver Canucks, it is followed up with a torrential downpour. The Canucks will be without their leading goal scorer for the rest of their road trip, one that resumes on Friday night against the Washington Capitals. Wednesday should have been a night that left the Canucks feeling good about themselves. They snapped a seven-game road losing streak with a 3-2 shootout win over the Winnipeg Jets in the opener of a four-game swing and saw forward AlexandreBurrows net his first two goals of the season. Of course, the good came with the bad as RyanKesler left in the game following a knee-on-knee collision and went back to Vancouver for further tests. It is not known how long he will be out, but head coach John Tortorella did admit that Kesler will not play for the rest of this trip, one that includes games versus the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning. Kesler was mentioned in a number of trade rumors before last weeks deadline, but the Canucks did not pull the trigger on a deal to move the forward, who has 22 goals on the season. Keslers 40 points are tied with DanielSedin, currently out with a strained left hamstring, and one back of HenrikSedin for the team lead. Minus the forward, EddieLack made 32 saves through overtime before stopping all three skaters he faced in the shootout. Vancouver then earned the extra point on ChrisHiggins third-round tally. "We lose (Kesler) before the third and we get down, so yeah, I thought we played hard right on through. And thats two out of the last three games that we have played well in the third period, so good for them," Tortorella said. "Theyve hung in there, theyve hung together. Losing a big guy like (Kesler), I thought they stuck together as a group. It was really nice to see." So was the production from Burrows, who scored his first goals since April 15 of last year. That gave him a gap of 40 games between goals in the regular season. "It was one of those nights it seemed the puck was finding me around the net," said Burrows, who hadnt scored a goal in his first 35 games of the season. "I had a lot of chances. Honestly, I think I had four real good looks." Vancouver picked up its first road win since Jan. 21 in Edmonton and sits four points back of a playoff spot in the Western Conference. Lack, meanwhile, rebounded after giving up six third-period goals in a 7-4 setback to the visiting New York Islanders on Monday and is likely to face Washington tonight for the first time. The Capitals are looking to put their own struggles behind them as they were just swept in a home-and-home set by the Pittsburgh Penguins. That gave the club five losses in its past six games and Washington sits three points out of the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. After losing a 3-2 decision at home on Monday, the Capitals were blanked 2-0 in Pittsburgh the following night. JaroslavHalak made 32 saves, but the Penguins Marc-AndreFleury stopped all 32 shots he faced. "We were on our heels the whole first period, no question," said Capitals coach AdamOates. "We turned it over too many times -- probably a little hangover from (Monday) night." EvgenyKuznetsov failed to record a point in the two games, the first of his NHL career after signing an entry-level deal on Saturday. He was the 26th overall pick of the 2010 draft and the Russian-born forward had been playing in the Kontinental Hockey League. It has also been a rough few games for Caps forward AlexOvechkin, who leads the NHL with 44 goals but does not have a point in his past four games. He is a minus-4 over that span. Halak, acquired from the Buffalo Sabres before the trade deadline, started both games versus the Penguins and is 4-3-1 lifetime with a 2.12 goals against average versus the Canucks. Fellow Washington netminder BradenHoltby has never faced them. The Capitals have lost four straight and nine of their last 10 meetings with the Canucks, including a 3-2 setback in Vancouver on Oct. 26. The Canucks have won four of their last five trips to Washington and are eligible to have forward ZackKassian back in the lineup tonight. He finished serving a three-game suspension for a hit-from-behind versus Dallas last Thursday. Steve Johnson Womens Jersey ." Thornton went after Orpik during a stoppage in play a week ago, slew-footing him to the ice and punching him twice in the head. Orpik suffered a concussion and was taken off the ice on a stretcher and transported to the hospital. E. J. Manuel Bills Jersey . -- The Toronto Argonauts have their offensive leader back. NEW YORK -- As the NHL eyes expanded video review, its unlikely to solve problems with goaltender interference. The leagues competition committee met Monday, two days after a controversial goal in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup final that involved contact on Rangers goalie HenrikLundqvist, and discussed making more situations subject to review. But because of the variables present, theres no comfort level about making goaltender interference reviewable. "I think the underlying fundamental here is that if youre going to go to video review in a given area, there is the expectation of certainty," said MathieuSchneider, the NHLPAs special assistant to the executive director. "And its just not there. Its very difficult. The type of things that were talking about, a possible coachs challenge, are things that we might be able to be certain on. But theres still a ton of grey area." The Kings goal Saturday night that helped them build a 2-0 series lead was not the reason goaltender interference came up at the annual meeting, but its certainly a hotter topic because of it. The leagues general managers will discuss it Wednesday as well, but executive vice president and director of hockey operations Colin Campbell expects there to be more education on the subject in lieu of video review. "Education thats meant for our players and our referees regarding how to call goaltender interference in various situations, so to be more defined in that area -- if it doesnt take another step, meaning some sort of video review on it," Campbell said. Nothing was resolved in terms of defining what video review could include next season, something that the GMs could try to hash out later this week. There are many possibilities. "We talked about pucks over the glass, we talked about offside goals," Campbell said. "Then, it comes to the question if its an offside play: how much time? Is it five seconds? Is it 10 seconds? Change of possession? On the rush? Puck leaving the zone? What if a minor occurs during that time and a goal was scored but the play was offside? Does the minor come down? Does a double-minor come down? Does a major come down?" A coachs challenge system could be part of that process, requiring a timeout to use one. But coaches would not be able to request a review on goaltender interference. The competition committee made some more solid recommendations on rule changes that GMs discussed at their March meeting in Boca Raton, Fla., most of which are designed to create more goals, including a more lenient interpretation of kicked-in goals and moving the faceoff-circle hashmarks back from 3 1/2 to 5 feet to give offensive teams more room to operate. "Theres a feeling that, again, this can create more offence, that forwards on a won draw in the offensive zone will have more time to make plays, more room to make plays off winning draws," Schneider said. "And then on the flip side, its going to reduce the amount of scrums that we have off faceoffs separating those two players a little bit more." If approved by the GMs, board of governors and NHLPA executive committee like all of these changes must be in order to go into effect, on icing calls, the offending team wont be able to replace the original player taking the faceoff as a way of delaying. Aaron Williams Bills Jersey. One violation would bring a warning and second would bring a minor penalty. Small overtime adjustments also got the green light from the group, which included GMs Ken Holland of the Detroit Red Wings, David Poile of the Nashville Predators, Don Maloney of the Phoenix Coyotes and Peter Chiarelli of the Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers chairman Ed Snider and players RonHainsey, KevinShattenkirk, DanielWinnik, Michel Cammalleri and CorySchneider. Teams will change ends and the ice will get a dry scrape before the five-minute overtime in the regular season. The goal is to have more games decided in overtime and fewer in shootouts, with the long change like the second period representing the first step. "Historically in our league, more goals are scored in the second period than the first and third, and were hoping the long change would affect in a positive way goal scoring so we change ends in overtime now in the playoffs, so we thought why not," Campbell said. "We thought that was a silly reason to not change ends." One new recommendation is to make the trapezoid behind the nets four feet bigger to give goaltenders more room to handle the puck. Schneider has pointed to the safety of defencemen as the reason. "Weve been talking about the trapezoid for a couple of years now, and the idea of either eliminating the trapezoid or expanding it to give more relief to defencemen going back to retrieve pucks," Scheider said. "Goalies would have better opportunity to get their defencemen out of danger zones." And while there wasnt much of a consensus about video review, embellishment seems to be a different story. The next step is figuring out how to solve the issue. "We feel embellishment in the game is a real problem today," Campbell said. "We understand players try to draw penalties. We feel its out of control, and weve discussed another approach at embellishment, similar to the rule thats already in the rule book. But there would not be a game suspension attached to that, there would be a warning and fines." That could include fining coaches and organizations along with players, Campbell added. While that could help curb one problem that has been part of these playoffs, goalie interference remains an almost unsolvable issue. Even the Game 2 situation brought what Schneider called a "split room" on whether it should have counted or not. "Theres a lot of instances where you have two reasonable people looking at the same video and have two different interpretations, and goalie interference is certainly one of those," Schneider said. "I think the education process is whats going to be most important for the officials, for the players, and I think Colin alluded to, we want to maybe err on the side of the goalie more often. Well, thats the direction we have to give to the officials. "The education process is going to be key. And to have certain telltale signs." ' ' '

BUFFALO, N. Gabe Jackson Jersey .Y. -- ZemgusGirgensons scored the tying goal in the second period and added a score in the 10th round of a shootout to lift the Buffalo Sabres to a 2-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night. RyanMiller made 35 saves for the Sabres, who snapped a three-game losing skid. MattMoulson, BrianFlynn and SteveOtt also scored for Buffalo in the shootout. With his 46th shootout win, Miller took sole possession of the record for most shootout wins in NHL history. The Rangers HenrikLundqvist has 45. MilanMichalek scored Ottawas goal and RobinLehner made 35 saves. The Senators shootout scorers were MikaZibanejad, KyleTurris and Michalek. Buffalo is 4-0 in games decided by a shootout. JamieMcBain appeared to give the Sabres a second-period lead at the 15:30 mark when Lehner pushed a loose puck into his own net, but referee Tom Kowal ruled that the whistle had blown. The play was reviewed and fans were treated to a replay with the on-ice volume amplified that showed the puck crossing the line before the whistle blew. The NHL released a statement saying there was a delayed penalty on Ottawa which shouldve stopped play when Ottawa touched the puck. The Sabres hadnt played since Saturday and controlled much of the first two periods against a Senators team playing a third game in four nights. Ottawa scored first on a 2-on-1 rush 6:25 into the first period, when Michalek beat Miller for his fifth goal of the season. Buffalo nearly tied it when ErikKarlsson took a hooking call at the 9:14 mark of the second period, but Lehner made four saves on Buffalos first power play of the night to protect the 1-0 lead. Girgensons had the game-tying goal. ChristianEhrhoff took a wrist shot that Lehner kicked to his right and Girgensons swatted at the loose puck. It beat Lehner between the legs, hitting each skate before crawling over the goal line. The Sabres had a season-high 18 shots in the second period, and their 29 shots through two periods were more than theyve had in 21 full games. Ottawa controlled the third period as it outshot Buffalo 13-6. Overtime had free-flowing play with scoring chances for both teams. Miller made a sprawling stop on ChrisPhillips before McBain was unable to convert two chances in the Ottawa end. TylerMyers was led off the ice in overtime after taking a JasonSpezza shot to the face. Ehrhoff nearly put the Sabres in front early in the third on a breakaway attempt that fooled Lehner, but went wide of the goal. NOTES: Sabres LW VilleLeino was a healthy scratch for Buffalo. "He didnt practice all that well," Sabres coach Ted Nolan said of Leino, who is goalless in 19 games. "I think were part of our environment. If we dont practice hard, how are you going to play hard?" ... D EricGryba and C MikeHoffman were scratched for Ottawa. ... MikeWeber was again scratched for the Sabres. The 19-year-old Rupert played for the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League this season, putting up 21 goals, 52 assists, 54 penalty minutes and a plus-36 rating in 68 regular-season games.MADRID, Spain -- Cristiano Ronaldo helped Real Madrid reach its third Copa del Rey final in four seasons with a 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday and a 5-0 victory on aggregate. Ronaldo, who was hit on the head by a cigarette lighter at halftime, converted a pair of early penalties at the Vicente Calderon to put the match beyond Atleticos reach. Atletico beat Madrid at its Santiago Bernabeu Stadium to lift the trophy last season, but exits the domestic cup competition with doubts about its surprise Spanish league aspirations. Madrid will face either Barcelona or Real Sociedad in the April 19th final, with Barcelona leading 2-0 going into the second leg at San Sebastian. "Its the least important competition of our season but a final is always something nice for the team," Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said. Already trailing 3-0, Atletico was also missing strikers Diego Costa and David Villa plus goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and defender Filipe Luis for Tuesdays second leg match. Despite Atletico coach Diego Simeones promises of a rally, the hosts were effectively out of the competition just seven minutes into the game when the inexperienced Javier Manquillo shoved Ronaldo from behind inside the area to set up the opening spot kick. Ronaldo blasted his shot into the left side of net, past the diving Daniel Aranzubia, to end a three-game goal drought. Raul Garcia, who was moved up from midfield to striker because off the absences, saw his shot come off the post just moments before Madrid doubled its advantage. Matt McGloin Raiders Jersey. "The first leg was very important, of course, and the two penalties also," Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas said. "They took some of their bite away." Atletico defender Emiliano Insua slid into Gareth Bale to set up the second penalty after 16 minutes, with Ronaldo beating Aranzubia to the same side but along the ground for his 34th goal of the season. There was little drama beyond that apart from the yellow lighter that struck Ronaldo as he left for the dugout at halftime, which could lead to a fine or sanction for Atletico. "Those two quick goals changed the face of the game," Atletico midfielder Jose Sousa said. Manquillo was taken to hospital after he came down awkwardly on his neck just before halftime. Casillas extended his run to 863 minutes without conceding, a run stretching back to November in the Champions League and Copa del Rey. Madrid has now gone 24 matches unbeaten, but it wont have Ronaldo back in its lineup until its Champions League match at Schalke on Feb. 26. He will miss the next two league games as he completes a three-match ban. A third loss in a week has dented Atleticos season as the surprise La Liga challengers have been undone by injuries and fatigue from a mounting schedule. BARCELONA, Spain -- David Zurutuza lasted only five minutes, but it was long enough to score the opening double in Real Sociedads 5-1 rout of Sporting Gijon in the Spanish league on Sunday. Evan Dietrich-Smith Buccaneers Jersey . The 25-year-old midfielder volleyed Antoine Griezmanns cross into the left corner for Sociedads second-minute opener, and a minute later he stunned Sporting with another shot from the right side of the area after Carlos Vela had played him clear. "Those goals were just surreal," said Sporting coach Manolo Preciado. "All the goals that they had missed earlier in the season went in today." But Zurutuzas dream start took an ugly turn in the fifth minute when he and Sporting defender Gregory Arnolin collided face-to-face while disputing a loose ball. Zurutuza was taken off on a stretcher, and the Basque club said after the game that he had a broken nose and will need surgery. Gregory tried to continue after cleaning the blood from his face but was substituted soon after. Miguel de las Cuevas grabbed one back for Sporting two minutes after halftime, only to see Sociedads Gorka Elustondo tap in a poorly defended corner kick in the 75th. Mikel Aranburu and Griezmann scored in stoppage time at Anoeta stadium to seal a win that lifted Sociedad four points clear of the drop. "Its a pity for Zurutuza to score the two goals in such good form and then hurt his nose," said Sociedad coach Philippe Montanier. "We will keep him in our thoughts." Earlier, Granada coach Abel Resino got off to a winning start as his team moved out of the relegation zone with a 2-1 win at Real Betis, while third-place Valencia was held to a 2-2 draw at Racing Santander. Striker Odion Ighalo put Granada ahead in the 13th minute with a low shot from the edge of the area, and Carlos Martins finished off a counterattack for the visitors second five minutes before halftime. The home side improved after the interval and substitute Jonathan Pereira made it 2-1 in the 81st but that was as close as Betis came. Resino, a former Atletico Madrid coach, took over promoted Granada earlier this week after Fabricio Gonzalez was fired following a three-game losing streak. "The feelings are good, but we saw a little of everything today," said Resino. "Weve been working together for just a week so we cant ask for big things." Valencia looked set to get its first win in four weeks when substitute Aritz Aduriz scored two second-half goals to cancel out Adrian Gonzalezs early opener for Racing. But defender Bernardo Espinosa headed home Racings equalizer in the 88th to split the points in a physical contest marked by another scary head-to-head collision. Racings Papakouly Diop and Valencias Mehmet Topal knocked heads with around 20 minutes to play, leaving Diop temporarily unconscious on the pitch before being substituted. Topal was also taken off on a stretcher. Racings Pedro Munitis and Valencias Ricardo Costa were both sent off late with second bookings for a spat near the end of the match. Also, Getafe dealt Levante its second home loss of the season with a 2-1 win. Sevilla is at Malaga later, while Atletico Madrid visits Osasuna on Monday. On Saturday, Real Madrid moved seven points clear at the top of table with a 3-1 win over last-place Zaragoza and Barcelonas 0-0 draw at Villarreal. Also, Fernando Llorente scored a hat trick to give Athletic Bilbao a 3-0 win at Rayo Vallecano, and Espanyol edged 10-man Mallorca 1-0. Bilbao visits third-tier Mirandes on Tuesday in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semifinal. Valencia hosts Barcelona in the other series opening game on Wednesday. Buccaneers #87 Jersey . He also let the stacked field know that he just might be the skip to beat at the Olympic trials later this year. Howard, from Coldwater, Ont., scored two in the final end for a 4-3 victory over Winnipegs Mike McEwen in the final Grand Slam event of the season. Lavelle Hawkins Buccaneers Jersey . JasonSpezza and MilanMichalek scored shootout goals to bail out the Senators after they wasted a three-goal first-period lead in a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday.CINCINNATI- The Toronto Blue Jays have quite the act to follow. The American League East leaders take aim at a second straight victory on Saturday afternoon in the middle contest of a three-game set with the Cincinnati Reds. The Blue Jays seemed well on their way to an eighth loss in 10 games in Fridays opener, falling behind 8-0 after the second inning. However, they began to chip away, starting with EdwinEncarnacions three-run homer in the third frame, and trailed 9-3 after the fifth inning before catching fire and battling back for a 14-9 win. Toronto tied the contest in the eighth inning on DionerNavarros RBI double and Encarnacion highlighted a five-run ninth frame with another three-run homer, his MLB-leading 23rd longball of the year. JuanFrancisco had a two-run homer and BrettLawrie added a solo shot as Toronto snapped a three-game losing streak. "What a ballgame. Those things are some kind of rare," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said on his teams website. "Were down 8-0, youre scrambling, and basically all youre thinking is, How are we going to get through this game with the pitching? Then of course Edwin got us on the board, we had some other action, we kind of held them in check and then we just kind of exploded." DevinMesoraco and JayBruce hit two-run homers in the big second inning for the Reds, and Mesoraco added a run-scoring groundout in the fifth inning, but Cincinnati ended uup losing its second straight game after winning six of seven. Kadeem Edwards Buccaneers Jersey. "Fortunately, tonights loss counts as one loss. Unfortunately, it was an ugly loss," Reds manager BryanPrice said on his teams official website. "And that is one of the types of losses that affects everybody." Despite the epic comeback, the Blue Jays hope that starter J.A.Happ can prevent the club from falling behind big again today. Happ has won five of his last seven starts and is coming off a 5-2 victory in Baltimore on Sunday. The left-hander had one of his better outings of the year, allowing one run on seven hits over six innings while striking out six without a walk. Happ, 31, improved to 6-3 with a 4.05 earned run average on the year and is 1-2 lifetime versus the Reds with a 5.64 ERA in five meetings. Looking to right the Reds ship will be MikeLeake, but he will need to put his June struggles behind him to do so. Leake has pitched to an 8.22 ERA in three outings this month, losing the first two before getting plenty of support in a 13-4 victory over Milwaukee on Sunday. The 26-year-old righty needed the help as he allowed four runs on nine hits and three walks in five innings of work. Leake is 4-6 with a 3.80 ERA on the season and lost his only previous start against the Blue Jays on June 17, 2011, though he allowed just three runs over seven innings. Toronto is 9-4 versus Cincinnati dating back to the 2003 campaign. ' ' '

Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn. Wes Welker .ca. Kerry, I appreciate your earlier comments on Torontos handling of the Vanek goal, and Im sure youve seen the Howie Rose-Kris King interview by now. Im still left with some basic questions about what the actual NHL rules are at this point, and was hoping you could provide some insight. 1. Does the situation room still need clear, incontrovertible evidence to overturn calls made on the ice? Every NHL announcer seems to think so, but Kris King clearly indicates that while that logic held in many cases there was a specific subset of calls (including kicking motion) where the situation room could take the on-ice call as purely advisory and didnt have to find incontrovertible video evidence in order to overturn. Is Kings view backed up by formal statements/rule changes? Do NHL refs uniformly understand that Toronto needs clear evidence to overturn in some cases but not in others? 2. Kings comments seemed contradictory in that he said the rules regarding kicking were defined so that neither refs or the situation room needed to make any judgment as to the players intent (i.e goals scored by kicking should be disallowed even if they could be considered unintentional or inadvertent), but also raised the point that "foot dragging" could be defined as "kicking" in this context. First of all, Rule 38.4 which you quoted in your initial comment does not mention foot dragging, and the "pendulum" motion it prohibits would seem to explicitly exclude the possibility of disallowing goals based on foot dragging. Has there been an internal memo or formal rule change that all NHL refs would be aware of that expands Rule 38.4 to include foot dragging? Secondly, outside of extraordinarily blatant cases, how could anyone disallow a goal on foot dragging grounds without judging the players intentions? Hundreds of goals go off skates where there has been no "pendulum" type kicking motion. How could anyone distinguish good from bad goals without determining whether they thought the player was trying to intentionally redirect a puck, as opposed to simply position themselves near the goal mouth where lucky bounces sometimes occur? We all understand that no set of rules can ever be perfect. The issue here is that you and most fans that saw the Vanek video believed the rule to be applied in that situation was one thing, and King may have implied (but never clearly said), no - the rule to be applied in that situation is different. If the rules are 100 per cent clear to refs and everyone in the league, it would still be useful to communicate changes more clearly so that announcers and journalists arent confusing the fans. Of course, if situation room personnel think they can establish rule interpretations that the on-ice staff isnt in sync with, that would raise a different set of issues. Hoping you can clarify what the real situation is. Hubert Horan Hubert: I truly believe that each person who staffs the Situation Room on a nightly basis in Toronto is a man of integrity and cares deeply about the game. They do not take the huge responsibility handed to them lightly and they do strive to get every call right through video review to the best of their ability. When a play, subject to review, is taken over by the Situation Room their judgment is independent of the referees and any decision rendered through video review is final. The only exception is when video review returns an "inconclusive verdict" at which time the call reverts back to the referee on the ice. In almost every case the referees initial call will then stand. The referees make the call from their vantage point in real time based on the rules as written and with the direction and expected standard of enforcement they are handed from their superiors. The refs recognize that their decision on the ice can be overturned for any reason, whether they agree or even like it! It would appear, at least from the perception of the personnel conducting the video review, that clear and incontrovertible evidence is present for them to overturn a referees call on the ice. That perception and ultimate decision is always subject to debate and scrutiny from the hockey community. While I cant ever recall Kris King agreeing with a penalty I assessed against him during his 14 season NHL career I know him to be a very good, honest and charitable person. As a former player that was most often cheered by adoring fans, Kris and his colleagues in the Situation Room can sometimes find their decisions challenged rather vehemently by various members of the hockey community. No differently than a referee experiences throughout his career, it goes with the territory! This might explain some of Kris apparent defensiveness during the interview with Howie Rose. What Kris didnt explain, but only alluded to, were instructions provided them by the general managershow to ascertain a "distinct kicking motion" beyond the definition provided in rule 38.4 (iv). If such instructions include a skate drag or worse yet, unintended contact with a players skate resulting from physical contact by an opponent, these new criteria should be clearly communicated to the rest of the hockey world. That I believe is the question that Howie Rose and the rest of us would like a clear answer to. I would be most curious to know if Isles GM GarthSnow and Habs GM MarcBergevin (following BrendanGallaghers disallowed goal) among others have signed off on the instructions Kris King alluded to. A referee often factors in "player intent" when imposing his judgment on infractions and calls. To suggest otherwise is illogical. At the present time a vast majority of the hockey community, including current and former officials, current and former players, broadcasters and fans cant logically understand decisions to disallow goals like the one that went into the net off the skate of ThomasVanek. The answer to that question has to come clearly and definitively from Colin Campbell, current Executive Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations who holds the keys to the Kingdom. Finally, the integrity and accuracy of the video review process would be greatly enhanced if the NHL were to employ former referees to provide their specialized expertise and INDEPENDENT judgment in these matters no differently than the other major professional sports leagues have recognized is necessary. Britton Colquitt .1 million pounds ($61.2 million) on Saturday, giving the beleaguered English Premier League champions a major lift. Montee Ball . There are still plenty of other former winners set to participate in the Skills Competition on Saturday at Ottawas Scotiabank Place, including All- Star team captain ZdenoChara, snipers DanielSedin and EvgeniMalkin and speedster MarianGaborik. LOS ANGELES -- History? Pressure? JasonCollins would have none of it after becoming the NBAs first active openly gay player. After all, it was almost game time. "Right now Im focusing on trying to learn the plays, learning the coverages and the game plan and the assignments. So I didnt have time to really think about history," Collins said at a crowded press conference less than an hour before his Brooklyn Nets faced the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night. Collins signed a 10-day contract with the Nets earlier Sunday and played in the first half against the Lakers, grabbing a rebound and committing a couple of fouls. The 35-year-old centre revealed at the end of last season he is gay, but he was a free agent and had remained unsigned. Collins said he was aware of the magnitude of his signing, but repeatedly said he was most concerned with learning the Nets schemes. "The pressure is playing in an NBA game tonight and last time I played in an NBA game was last April," Collins said. "So I think thats enough pressure right there." With a need for another big man, the Nets turned to the 7-foot Collins, who helped them reach two NBA Finals in the early 2000s. "The decision to sign Jason was a basketball decision," general manager Billy King said in a statement. "We needed to increase our depth inside, and with his experience and size, we felt he was the right choice for a 10-day contract." Collins has played 12 NBA seasons, including his first seven with the Nets, when they were in New Jersey and JasonKidd was their point guard. Kidd is now the Nets coach and Collins has been a teammate of several other current Nets. "Jason told us that his goal was to earn another contract with an NBA team. Today, I want to commend him on achieving his goal. I know everyone in the NBA family is excited for him and proud that our league fosters an inclusive and respectful environment," Commissioner Adam Silver said. The Nets worked out Collins during the All-Star break and met with him again Sunday, with his twin brother, Jarron, hinting that history would be made. "Hope everyone is enjoying their Sunday. Today should be a pretty cool day!" JarronCollins wrote on Twitter. The news on JasonCollins comes as Michael Sam, the SEC co-defensive player of the year from Missouri who recently revealed he is gay, is taking part in the NFL draft combine. Sams on-field workouts in Indianapolis are scheduled for Monday. Collins was asked if he felt the tide is turning regarding gay players coming out, including Sam. "I hope so. What Michael said was it was about him being a football player and me being a basketball player, and going out there and trying to help our respective teams win," Collins said. He played 38 games last season with Boston and Washington and averaged 1.1 points and 1.6 rebounds in limited minutes. For his career, the 7-foot Collins averages 3.6 points and 3.8 rebounds. "Im a solid veteran, and hopefully Ill be in the right place" on the court, Collins said. "I know I can execute the game plan. Its just about focusing on the task at hand and not thinking about history or anything along those lines. Nate Irving. I just want to make it difficult for the Lakers tonight." Collins entered the game with 10:28 left in the second quarter and the Nets leading 35-26 after NickYoung made the first of his two free throws. The crowd welcomed him with a nice ovation when public address announcer Lawrence Tanter announced his name. Collins announcement last spring was followed by numerous NBA players insisting he would be welcomed in the locker room. Collins has played for five other teams and is well respected inside and outside the league -- he attended the State of the Union as a guest of first lady Michelle Obama. "I just know Jason as a person and as a player. Thats what Im happy about. He has earned it. Hes a great guy. Its good for the league. The important thing is to judge him as a person and a basketball player," Chicago coach Tom Thibodeau said. "I know people who have coached him, and I know how highly thought of he is." Former Suns player Kevin Johnson, now Sacramentos mayor, said he saw Collins two weeks ago at the White House "and I thanked him for his courage and being strong and wished him well and to keep fighting hard. "I think its incredible for him. I think its incredible for the league. If Im on the Nets, my commitment is I want to get in the playoffs and I want to go far. All that is fine but I need him to win games and I think hes up for that challenge." The Nets had an opening for a big man after trading ReggieEvans along with JasonTerry to Sacramento on Wednesday for guard MarcusThornton. King said Thursday that Collins would be among the players they would look at, insisting they wouldnt be concerned about any extra attention the signing of Collins would provide. "Were going to bring in a basketball player," King said. "Its not about marketing or anything like that." The Nets posted a photo on their Twitter account of Kidd watching Collins sign his contract, encouraging followers to retweet it to welcome Collins to Brooklyn. Collins is third in Nets history with 511 games played, and also ranks in their top 10 in minutes played, and offensive rebounds and total rebounds. A limited offensive player, the Nets hope he still provides a presence defensively and on the boards. "I know JasonCollins is a competitor. One thing I know about him is he fouls very hard," Miamis DwyaneWade said with a laugh. "Hes one of those tough veterans. Im sure hes happy to be back playing in the league. Welcome back." Since making his announcement last year, "Life is more exciting for me," Collins said. "I mean, I dont have to hide who I am and I can be my normal self. The past 10 months have been incredible. Im making new friends, hearing different peoples stories, sharing experiences. Its just been an overall positive." Collins grew up in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles and has a house here, so there was some normalcy to his day. "It was pretty easy for me just to come to the game tonight," Collins said, "drive down the 405, take the 10 and get here in 20 minutes." ' ' '

Jim Rutherford didnt expect to fill all the holes on the Pittsburgh Penguins roster in a day. Earl Mitchell Dolphins Jersey . Good thing, because it didnt happen. Not even close. Still, the new general manager isnt panicking despite losing six players in free agency, including defencemen BrooksOrpik and MattNiskanen, and talented winger JussiJokinen. Less than a month into the job, Rutherford is taking a pragmatic approach to replenishing the talent around stars SidneyCrosby and EvgeniMalkin. The process began Tuesday when the Penguins signed defenceman ChristianEhrhoff, forward BlakeComeau and goaltender ThomasGreiss to one-year deals. The team also retained forward MarcelGoc. Hardly the kind of splashy signings made elsewhere -- Washington spent $67.5 million alone to bring in Orpik and Niskanen -- but Rutherford isnt complaining. "We dont necessarily have to have our team all set for a playoff run in September," he said. Ehrhoff came onto the market over the weekend after the Buffalo Sabres bought out the final seven seasons his 10-year contract. The 31-year-old will make $4 million next season in Pittsburgh. The German-born Ehrhoff has 69 goals and 313 points in 692 games, and Rutherford believes Ehrhoffs skill set will fit in well under new coach Mike Johnston. "He plays a lot of minutes, 23-24 a game, can play right or left defence, power play, penalty kill," Rutherford said. "Hes in great shape and a great team guy. He can really skate and with the kind of team we have, having a guy back there that can skate and move the puck is important." Rutherford is confident the young defencemen in Pittsburghs minor league system will give the Penguins a solid blue line even without Orpik -- the longest-tenured defenceman in team history -- and Niskanen, who cashed in after a career year. Still, Rutherford didnt waste a chance to grab Ehrhoff despite the shortness of the deal. "He loved the opportunity to come with the Penguins," Rutherford said. "He just felt that, lets give it a one-year try with a good team and have a chance to win and then well look at it at the end of the season." Comeau provides depth as a third or fourth line forward. The 28-year-old had five goals and 11 assists in 61 games for the Columbus Blue Jackets last season. Greiss, who went 10-8-5 with a 2.29 goals-against average for Phoenix in 2013-14, will compete with JeffZatkoff for the backup spot behind Marc-AndreFleury. The signings give the Penguins depth, but also leave plenty to address going forward, including who is going to play with Malkin after the departure of Jokinen and JamesNeal. The Penguins traded Neal to Nashville for PatricHornqvist and NickSpaling on Friday, and Jokinen left on Tuesday to sign a four-year deal with the Florida Panthers. Hornqvist is a candidate to fill out a top six spot, and the return of PascalDupuis from a knee injury and BeauBennett from a wrist injury should give the Penguins some options. Rutherford didnt rule out a run at free agent forward NikolaiKulemin -- who happens to be a good friend of Malkins -- but isnt sure the money will work. "Theres always a chance but it would take someone getting very, very creative to figure out how that contract fits into our cap," Rutherford said. ------ AP Sports Writer John Wawrow in Buffalo, NY contributed to this report. Cameron Wake Womens Jersey . The overall big league average rose 5.4 per cent this season to a record $3.39 million, according to the annual report released Wednesday by the Major League Baseball Players Association. Michael Egnew Dolphins Jersey . Smyth scored a pair of goals as the Edmonton Oilers won their fifth game in a row, beating the St.Toronto Maple Leafs legend and Hockey Hall of Famer MatsSundin joined TSN Radio 1050s Jim Tatti and JeffONeill on Friday to give his thoughts on the Olympic hockey tournament ahead of Sundays gold medal match-up between his native Sweden and Canada. While there is a lot that Sundin has liked in the tournament so far, the performance that Russia put forth against Finland in the quarterfinals left a bad taste in his mouth. "I was almost disgusted by their performance when they played Finland," said the 43-year-old who played 18 seasons in the NHL. "I look at the Finnish team and theyre missing key players. They dont have any of their big stars and now [Rask] is hurt and that Russian team is stacked with great players and to come out and have that performance they had in the quarterfinals. It was an absolutely heartless performance. "It was very disappointing and I dont think its very good for hockey either to have them out of their home tournament. You wonder when you have Putin in the stands on home ice and you cant get heart out of these guys? Whats going to bring it out? I dont know," he said. Sundin believes simply chalking up Russias crashing out of the tournament to the tremendous pressure the team was under is a bit of a cop-out. "Even though youre nervous or you have a lot of pressure built up, you can always still get into the motions and show that youre actually trying," said the former first-overall pick by the Quebec Nordiques in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft. "We didnt see anything of that in the quarterfinal." The captain of the gold medal-winning Swedish team in the 2006 Olympics in Torino, Sundin believes that its impossible to compare trying to capture a Stanley Cup to winning Olympic gold. "You cant even compare it to me," said Sundin. "I mean, the Stanley Cup is the biggest thing you can win playing for a club team in the world. Its over a [full] season and you try to get that, but saying that, international hockey and the Olympic Games go to a little bit of a higher level. You have all the absolute best players in the world competing. Its a short tournament, but its the absolute best, biggest thing you can win as a hockey player today where you face every countrys best players on the ice. And also, for any athlete, women or men, winning an Olympic medal is a little bit beyond just the sport of hockey, as well. You cant compare them, but obviously, you want to be part of both for sure." Sundin thinks that an unfamiliarity with the larger ice surface is one of the main reasons why Canadas offence has yet to really click in Sochi, despite the team being undefeated. Mike Wallace Dolphins Jersey. "The last time the Olympics were around, the tournament was held on a smaller ice surface, an edge to the North American teams, no doubt," said Sundin. "The US and Canada were more comfortable. You look at the tournament right now, you can tell [Canada] is not as comfortable on the big ice surface...with the bigger ice surface, it becomes a little bit of a different game." The all-time Leafs leader in points acknowledges that an adjustment needs to be made for North American teams playing on the big international ice. "Just one big difference is when you come into an end, whether its your own end or youre in the offensive zone, youre further away from your opponent," explained the nine-time NHL All-Star. "Theres a little bit more room for a forward to slip away or get out of the way, out of position, so when that happens, and I think a North American feels that, you get a little more tentative and if youre tentative in hockey or you wait a little bit, then youre a step behind. I think thats the biggest thing." With NHL participation up in the air for the 2018 Olympic Games to be held in Pyeongchang, South Korea, Sundin believes it would be a mistake for the league to stop sending its best to the tournament as its a perfect opportunity to put a spotlight on the sport. "For me, its a no-brainer," said Sundin. "I think youve got to look at the broader picture. For the game of hockey, and if you want the game to continue to grow, theres no better window than the Olympic Games, where you can get new fans watching our great game, people from different parts of the world. I dont really see a reason why not. I know it affects the game short term. Some guys get hurt (and) when they get back they might not perform as well. But if you look at a long term picture, I think its just too big of a window to promote our sport to not be part of it." As for Sundays clash between his home country and the country he spent 18 years playing in, Sundin gives the edge to Canada. "Theres no doubt that the Swedish team...are not where you would think to call them a gold medal favourite at this point [without] HenrikSedin and HenrikZetterberg, two of the best centremen we have playing right now," said Sundin. "For them to get to the finals here, to get by Finland...Ill hold Canada as the favourites to win the gold medal, but if you have [Henrik] Lundqvist playing an enormous game in the final, theres a shot. But its a long shot for sure." ' ' '

LONDON -- Liverpool delivered a potent attacking master class on Sunday, with Luis Suarez at his devastating best in a 5-0 rout of Tottenham that signals the team can sustain a Premier League title challenge. Larry Csonka Womens Jersey . The 18-time champions, who havent won the title since 1990, moved two points behind Arsenal after the leaders were stunned 6-3 at Manchester City on Saturday. Defending champion Manchester United trails Arsenal by 10 points after winning 3-0 at Aston Villa to avoid a third successive league loss. After Danny Welbecks double for United, Suarez netted twice for Liverpool and played a part in the other three goals at White Hart Lane. After another demoralizing collapse, Tottenham, which see itself as a Champions League team, is five points from fourth place but above United. It is Liverpool exceeding expectations this season, sitting in second place. The gulf between Liverpool and Tottenham, although only six points, seemed far wider on the basis of Sundays lopsided encounter. The contrast between the strike forces in the league is glaring. Suarez has 17 goals in a season that only began in late September as he completed a 10-game biting ban. Tottenham has scored only 15 times in 16 league games and couldnt even muster a shot on target against the visitors who were without the injured striker Daniel Sturridge and captain Steven Gerrard on Sunday. Instead Suarez captained Liverpool for the first time, an unthinkable proposition when he was banned for racist abuse, then biting before agitating for a transfer in the summer window. Suarez took just 18 minutes to open the scoring. Defender Michael Dawson blocked a through ball from Suarez, but Jordan Henderson recovered possession and fed the Uruguay striker to nip in and score. Henderson volleyed in the second five minutes before halftime, seizing the ball after Suarez was denied by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. Any hopes of a Tottenham comeback were thwarted by Paulinho being sent off in the 63rd for sinking his boot into Suarezs ribs. With a man advantage, Liverpool was even more dangerous up front. And Suarez then crossed for Flanagan to score Liverpools third in the 75th, found the net again himself in the 84th by chipping Lloris, and fed the ball for Sterling to complete the rout five minutes later. "I loved our arrogance today," Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said. "The arrogance with the ball was very good -- lots of angles, lots of people moving and interchanging positions. "We looked a real threat whilst retaining that solidity in defensive shapes." At Villa Park, Welbeck seized on Robin van Persies injury absence to score his first goal since the opening day of the season in August. Welbeck buried the rebound in the 15th minute after Adnan Januzaj headed against a post, and netted again three minutes later from Antonio Valencias cross. "It is really important for Danny," United manager David Moyes said. "He is a forward and he needs to get himself goals. He got two poacher types today and he could have had had another. "With Robin out he stepped up to the mark. When you get opportunities, you show what you can do. Danny certainly did that." Another goal drought ended, with Tom Cleverley, scoring his first goal in a year from Wayne Rooneys lay-off in the 52nd. In the days other game, Norwich and Swansea drew 1-1. Nathan Dyer capitalized on some poor defending from Norwich captain Sebastien Bassong to put the Welsh side ahead in the 12th minute. But Dyer was stretchered off before halftime with an ankle injury sustained in a challenge with Bassong. And in first half stoppage time, Gary Hooper levelled for Norwich, lashing home from 25 yards (meters) after collecting a knockdown on his chest. Cameron Wake Womens Jersey . On the first day of the Olympic trials for Canadas long-track speedskating team, Wotherspoon finished sixth in the mens 500 metres. According to Sean Ireland, Speed Skating Canadas long-track program director, that wont be good enough for the four-time Olympian from Red Deer, Alta. Brandon Gibson Jersey . -- Ryan Spanglers intense play has fueled Oklahomas growth this season. MILAN, Italy -- Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi and Inter Milan defender Juan Jesus were each banned for three matches by the Italian league on Monday for punching opponents. Neither player was punished by the referee during Saturdays 0-0 draw between Roma and Inter but the league judge made his decision based on TV replays. De Rossi landed a fist in the face of Mauro Icardi while jostling for position during the first half, and Jesus made strong contact with Alessio Romagnoli toward thhe end of the match. Dion Jordan Womens Jersey. As a result, De Rossi was dropped from Italys squad for Wednesdays friendly at Spain. Sassuolo forward Domenico Berardi was also banned for three matches, for elbowing an opponent and drawing a red card less than a minute after he went on in the second half of a 1-0 loss to Parma on Sunday. The incident cost Berardi his place in Italys Under-21 squad. The 19-year-old Berardi scored all four goals in a 4-3 win over AC Milan this season. ' ' '

REGINA - A downtown Regina bar had no problem serving the Calgary Stampeders horse -- as long as the beer was in a bowl. Saints #3 Jersey . The Stampeders rode their horse Justin into the Beer Bros. bar, a Bank of Montreal and the Ramada hotel on Thursday as part of Grey Cup week festivities. Fletcher Armstrong, with the Calgary Grey Cup committee, says fans always love to see the horse. The horse frequently stopped to pose for pictures with people in downtown Regina and one city police officer even got a turn in the saddle. Chef Erica Nimmo held out a platter with carrots and apples for Justin at the Ramada and laughed afterwards that shes never served a horse before. The tradition of riding a horse into a hotel was started in 1948, but almost didnt happen last year in Toronto when the Fairmont Royal York Hotel initially didnt let the horse through the door. Saints #5 Jersey . -- Sebastien Auger stopped 53 shots for his second shutout of the season as the Saint John Sea Dogs blanked the host Val-dOr Foreurs 2-0 on Friday in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.(Sports Network) - The Senators suffered the kind of lapse on Saturday that could have completely derailed their season. Instead, they dug in and gutted out a victory that moved them closer to a playoff spot. Ottawa looks to take another step towards the postseason today and keep its faint hopes at a division title alive as it visits the New York Islanders. The Senators were in Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon and jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first period on goals by DanielAlfredsson, JasonSpezza and ChrisNeil. CraigAnderson stopped all 15 shots faced in that opening frame, but was beaten three times in the second period on 14 shots as the Flyers battled back to tie the game. Ottawa, though, was able to slow Philadelphias momentum and got shootout goals from Spezza and MilanMichalek to grab a much-needed 4-3 win. "I thought it was a real good game," Senators head coach Paul MacLean said. "Obviously the first period was ours, the second period was theirs, and I thought the third period was played evenly. Both teams had a couple of opportunities, but it was a totally different game in the third than in the first two periods, I thought." The victory kept the seventh-place Senators two points clear of the Capitals in the Eastern Conference with four games to play and moved them four points ahead of the ninth-place Sabres. Ottaawa also trails sixth-seeded New Jersey by six points and has a game in hand over all three teams. Brodrick Bunkley Saints Jersey. Set to wrap a three-game road trip, the Senators are also six points behind the Bruins for first place in the Northeast Division. Boston also has four games left and is visiting the Rangers Sunday tonight. Ottawa dropped a 2-1 overtime decision at home to the New York Islanders back on Feb. 3, but has outscored them 11-2 in back-to-back victories since. The Senators rolled to a 6-0 victory at Long Island on Feb. 20, getting two goals and four points from defenseman ErikKarlsson and a 28-save shutout by Anderson. Karlsson had an assist in the win over the Flyers and his 77 points on the season by far lead all NHL defensemen. The Islanders play host to the Senators today after suffering a 6-3 loss to the Bruins on Saturday, one that officially eliminated the club from the playoff race. New York had won three straight and five of six coming in. P.A. Parenteau had two goals and KyleOkposo scored in his fifth straight game in defeat. "Its tough, you never want to be eliminated for good. Well turn the page here and try to finish strong in the last four games and see what happens," Parenteau said. AlMontoya allowed six goals -- four in the third period -- on 27 shots in defeat. New York wraps a three-game homestand this afternoon. ' ' '

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- When JohnnyCueto starts for Cincinnati, WilsonValdez knows the Reds might not need much offence. Tre Boston Jersey . The veteran utilityman drove in the tying run and scored the go-ahead run to back Cuetos gritty pitching as the Reds wrapped up one of the best homestands in franchise history with a 2-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday. "You know Johnnys not going to give up many runs," said Valdez, acquired by Cincinnati from Philadelphia in an off-season trade. "You know you might only have to score a couple of runs." Cueto (12-5) matched his single-season career high in wins and lowered his ERA to 2.23 to lead the Reds to their eighth victory on the 10-game homestand. Its only the fifth time in franchise history that Cincinnati posted at least eight wins on a home stand of 10 or fewer games. The last time was in 1975, when the Reds went 8-1 on a homestand. First-place Cincinnati sandwiched three-game sweeps of NL Central Division-rivals St. Louis and Milwaukee around a split of a four-game series against Arizona and maintained its lead over Pittsburgh in the division. The Reds, who lead the Pirates by a half-game, are 5-2 since learning that All-Star first baseman JoeyVotto needed arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. Manager Dusty Baker would prefer a perfect homestand, but hell take what he got from this one, which boosted the Reds a season-high 15 games over .500 (55-40). "We got off to a great start with the sweep of St. Louis and got a great end with this sweep," said Baker, who savored sweeping division foes. "Thats real big. You know you can pick up ground or lose ground." Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke was chagrined about being swept in a series the fourth-place Brewers considered to be crucial for staying in the race. "Its not a good time to lose three games to these guys," he said. "It was a disappointing weekend. This sure set us back. When youre behind three teams, its hard to catch up." Cueto (12-5) overcame a 30-pitch first inning, which ended with Milwaukee leaving the bases loaded, to complete seven while throwing 117 pitches. He gave up eight hits and one run with one walk. He tied his season high with nine strikeouts and capped his day by getting NL home run-leader RyanBraun to fly out to centre field with two outs and the potential tying run on third in the seventh inning. "I felt really well," Cueto said through interpreter and assistant trainer Tomas Veras. "I was aggressive on every pitch. In the first inning, I threw a lot of pitches. I was trying to throw fewer pitches after that. I always want to go into the seventh or the eighth inning." LoganOndrusek pitched the eighth inning. AroldisChapman allowed a two-out walk to pinch-hitter CarlosGomez, who stole second, before Chapman earned his 17th save by striking out Braun. Neither team hit a home run, snapping the streak of consecutive games in which at least one homer was hit at Great American Ball Park at 74. It was the longest active streak in the majors. Milwaukee took a 1-0 lead in the third on NorichikaAokis leadoff double and, after strikeouts by NyjerMorgan and Braun, a run-scoring opposite-field single to right-centre by AramisRamirez. The Reds capitalized on pitcher Mike Fiers throwing error to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning. ChrisHeisey singled with one out, stole second, and scored on WilsonValdezs single to right-centre field. Valdez went around to third on Fiers errant pickoff attempt and scored on BrandonPhillips sacrifice fly to centre. Valdez was going to third from the start, he said. "I was going to take a chance," he said. "They have to have perfect execution. They have to get to the ball, they have to pick up the ball, they have to get into position to make the throw, and they have to throw the ball." Fiers (3-4) lasted six innings, allowing five hits and two runs -- one earned -- with four strikeouts. He also hit a batter. "Its frustrating," Fiers said. "Youre trying hard to win. You get tired of losing. We didnt score a lot of runs, but Im trying to keep Valdez close, and throw the ball away. I feel like we should still be playing." NOTES: The Reds are 26-13 against Milwaukee over the last two seasons and 17-6 against the Brewers in Cincinnati over the last three seasons. ... RHP MatLatos, who allowed a career-high 10 hits in his last start against Houston on April 29, gets a chance to improve on that when he faces the Astros on Monday at Minute Maid Park in the first game of Cincinnatis seven-day, six-game road trip. ... LHP RandyWolf is scheduled to start for Milwaukee in the opener of a three-game series at Philadelphia. LAS VEGAS -- Nick Diaz didnt want to talk about pulling off the biggest win of his UFC career Saturday night.NEW YORK, N.Y. - MikeNapoli hoped Masahiro Tanaka would make a mistake. The New York Yankees ace sure did he twice shook off his catcher, then threw a pitch the Boston slugger could handle. Napoli stung Tanaka by hitting a solo home run with two outs in the ninth inning, lifting JonLester and the Red Sox over the Yankees 2-1 Saturday night. "What an idiot!" Napoli was heard exclaiming on Fox television microphones as he high-fived teammates in the dugout. Napoli later said he didnt mean any disrespect, adding he was "surprised" Tanaka didnt throw his tremendous split-finger fastball. Napoli had struck out in his previous two at-bats, was down 1-2 in the count this time and was having all sorts of trouble with Tanakas diving splitter. "He had me where he wanted me," Napoli said. Tanaka, however, preferred to throw a fastball. Napoli lined it the opposite way, into the first row of the seats in right field. Napoli, who also homered off Tanaka at Fenway Park in late April, raised his right arm as he rounded first base and clapped his hands as headed for second. Tanaka, the top winner in the majors and the AL ERA leader, turned to watch the ball sail, twisting his body when it cleared the wall. "It was the worst thing I couldve possibly done," Tanaka said through a translator. Tanaka wanted to take a different approach than catcher BrianMcCann. "He asked for a splitter and for a slider, and I shook off both of them," he said. Tanaka said he intended to throw a fastball out of the strike zone to set up a breaking ball. Instead, Napoli hit it out of the park. His third home run in five games, and 10th shot overall, flew far enough reach the short porch. "Power hitters are going to have the ability to hit to all fields. We all know that right field here is not very forgiving," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "Last night, they hit one in the first row. Tonight, we did." The Red Sox won for just the third time in nine games. The victory made the defending World Series champions 37-44 at the midpoint of the season its the first time since 1997 that Boston has been under .500 at the halfway mark. Lester (9-7) held the Yankees hitless until the sixth. He gave up an unearned run and five hits in eight innings, striking out six and walking two. KojiUehara pitched a perfect ninth for his 17th save in 18 chances. Tanaka (11-3) allowed seven hits in a complete game, striking ouut eight and walking one. Panthers Luke Kuechly Camo Jersey. The Yankees lost for the fifth time in seven games. Tanaka dropped consecutive starts for the first time in the majors. The matchup between Lester and Tanaka shaped up as a pitchers duel, and it certainly was. Lester improved to 13-6 lifetime against the Yankees, including a loss to Tanaka in Boston on April 22. Lester and Uehara came through for a Red Sox team that has scored three runs or fewer in 12 of its last 14 games. Napoli did his part, too, tagging Tanaka. "He pitched pretty well to Nap all night," Lester said. "Im guessing Nap put a pretty good swing on that ball right there. Luckily, were in Yankee Stadium and not anywhere else and that ball goes out." An odd sequence ended the Yankees eighth. JacobyEllsbury tried to steal second with two outs and the fans cheered when catcher DavidRoss throw skipped into centre field. As Ellsbury headed toward third, however, the crowd began to realize strike three had already been called on MarkTeixeira. Earlier in the inning, second baseman DustinPedroia made a nifty pickup and glove flip to start a double play on DerekJeter. Ross homered in his second straight game, launching a drive far over the left-field fence in the third. Tanaka muttered to himself as Ross rounded the bases. Lester, who threw a no-hitter against Kansas City in 2008, held the Yankees hitless until BrettGardner bounced a leadoff single up the middle in the sixth. Lesters bid was extended with two outs in the fifth when Yangervis Solarte was called out on a video review, taking away an infield single. Pedroia opened the next inning with a single, and tried to test the arm of Ellsbury, his former teammate. The Yankees centre fielder made an accurate throw and Pedroia was called safe, but he was ruled out after New York challenged the umpires decision. The Yankees scored in the third when BrianRoberts reached on shortstop StephenDrews error, Solarte was hit by a pitch, Gardner sacrificed and Jeter had an RBI grounder. NOTES: Of Bostons last 14 games, 10 have been decided by one run. The Red Sox are 6-4 in those games. ... The Red Sox are 26-26 at the new Yankee Stadium. ... Boston OF-INF MikeCarp (right foot) has started his rehab assignment at Triple-A Pawtucket. ...
