LAWRENCE, Kan. Donnie Avery . -- Kansas freshman Andrew Wiggins made official Monday what hes been telling folks all along: Hes headed to the NBA after his only season with the Jayhawks. The 6-foot-8 forward, who was voted second-team All-America earlier in the day, is expected to go in the top three picks in the June draft. Many believe he could go first overall. "It wasnt an easy decision because the fans showed me so much love here," said Wiggins, choking up briefly during a news conference at Allen Fieldhouse. "I just wish I had more time. College goes by so fast. I can see why people stay all four years." The Canadian was the top-rated recruit when he arrived at Kansas, and his brief career was a bit of a roller coaster. He struggled early in the season, caught fire midway through, and then flamed out when it mattered most in an NCAA tournament loss to Stanford. Wiggins, from Vaughan, Ont., only scored four points on 1-for-6 shooting in the third-round defeat. Afterward, he said despondently that he let his team down with his poor performance. That ultimately didnt have any bearing on his decision, though. He announced he was going pro while joined by Kansas coach Bill Self, his parents -- former NBA player Mitchell Wiggins and Olympic silver medallist Marita Payne Wiggins -- his older brother Mitchell Jr., and several of his teammates, including fellow freshmen Wayne Selden and Joel Embiid. Selden has already announced hes returning for his sophomore season. Embiid has not made a decision, even though hes also expected to be a top-five pick in the draft. Wiggins certainly had a historic season at Kansas. He averaged a freshman-record 17.1 points and nearly six rebounds per game, and was voted the APs Big 12 freshman of the year and first-team all-conference. "Obviously this announcement needed to happen," said Self, who believes one of the biggest challenges Wiggins will face is realizing that basketball will suddenly become his job. "Its not like this year. He came in with so much hype, and whether he knew it or not, everybody was salivating for a chance to go against a guy with that much hype," Self said. "And hes going to the next level with a lot of hype, but men are going to be saying, Whoa, whoa, whoa, rook. Ive been doing this a long time and youre going to have to earn your way." Wiggins simply flashed a smile when asked if he was ready for it. "Just listening to him now," his father said, "Im thinking about when he was that little bitty kid that was dirty, and not listening, and now? Hes a young man that I think gets it. I think hes going to do very well." Hes also made it through his freshman season healthy. Unlike Embiid, Wiggins never had to deal with any nagging injuries, and his mother said that factored into his decision. "The best thing is hes not injured. Hes able to go ahead and complete part of his goals," she said. "Every day is a new day. He has no injuries and hes ready to go." Self said Embiid is still wrestling with his stay-or-go decision. The 7-footer from Cameroon was waylaid late in the season by a stress fracture in his back, and that could factor into Embiids draft status, along with the fact that hes only been playing basketball for a few years. Embiid slipped out of the room immediately after Wiggins had finished speaking Monday, but Self told a few reporters that he had not made his decision, despite a report last week that said Embiid would enter the draft. "That doesnt mean he couldnt still do that, but that was gun-jumping," Self said. "It certainly upset him, because somebody that was a source obviously didnt have good information." Self doesnt expect Embiid to make his intentions known anytime soon. "The decision he needs to make is whats best for him," Self said, "whether to stay another year or to go, and I could see him do either one of them. And I think you could make a case that either one would be a good decision. Hes not quite like Andrew whos been playing the game his whole life. Hes only been playing three years. Hes still trying to figure it out." Brandon Flowers . Even when his team is so banged-up that it had two guys in protective facemasks on the court at the same time -- and one of them broke his nose again, anyway. Ryan Succop . 5 Trade Deadline is drawing closer and teams will be deciding on whether to buy or sell while figuring out which players can make the biggest difference and hold the greatest value.MOBILE, Ala. -- Catriona Matthew remained atop the Airbus LPGA Classic leaderboard Friday, birdieing four of the last seven holes to take a one-stroke advantage over Charley Hull into the weekend. The 44-year-old Matthew had a 5-under 67 to reach 13-under 131 on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trails Crossings Course. The 18-year-old Hull also shot 67. Matthew had six birdies and a bogey -- on the par-4 ninth -- in her afternoon round. "I played actually probably pretty well today," said Matthew, who opened with a 64 on Thursday. "I hit 17 greens, so I gave myself a lot of chances. I didnt hole many on the front nine, but then the putter got going a little bit on the back nine." The Scot won the last of her four LPGA Tour titles in 2011. "Obviously, theres still 36 holes to go," Matthew said. "If its anything like the first two days, were going to have to keep making birdies." Hull also dropped a stroke on No. 9, her final hole of the day. The English player birdied Nos. 6-8 and had five birdies in a seven-hole stretch before closing with her lone bogey of the week. "Hitting it pretty straight," Hull said. "Hit my irons good and holing some good putts. Missing a few putts, but youre always going to miss a few putts when youre playing well. But Im just excited about this golf course. I quite like it." Hull won a Ladies European Tour event in Morocco in March a week before her 18th birthday. She closed with a 9-under 62 and won on the first hole of a playoff. The teen is comfortable in the warm conditions in Mobile. "The weathers been pretty hot, but I quite like it," Hull said. Tamba Hali. "I think its a great place and its very green and a bit different than I expected. The trees are a lot different, but I enjoy it a lot." Anna Nordqvist, Jessica Korda and Hee Young Park were 10 under. Nordqvist, the winner in Thailand and Carlsbad, had a 66. Korda, the Bahamas champion, shot 67, and Park had a 66. "I got the ball close and was able to kind of make a couple putts on my front nine, which was the back nine," Korda said "Hopefully, I can keep that momentum going." Park, playing alongside Matthew, eagled the par-5 16th for the second straight day. Kraft Nabisco winner Lexi Thompson and Jenny Shin were 9 under. Thompson had a 65, and Shin shot 68. Second-ranked Stacy Lewis, No. 4 Suzann Pettersen and three-time Mobile winner Se Ri Park topped the group at 8 under. Lewis, the 2012 champion who won the North Texas LPGA Shootout three weeks ago, matched Pettersen with a 70. Pak, the 2010 winner who also won the Tournament of Champions at the course in 2001 and 2002, had a 69. Michelle Wie, the winner in Hawaii, was 7 under. She followed her opening 71 with a 66. Top-ranked Inbee Park missed the cut with rounds of 74 and 76, ending her cuts streak at 22. She had 34 putts in the second round and played her final nine in 4-over 40. The South Korean star is winless in nine tour starts this season after sweeping the first three majors last year and finishing the season with six victories. She last missed a cut last May in the Bahamas. ' ' '

The NBA is holding a news conference on Tuesday in New York to discuss the investigation into racist commentsallegedly made by Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling in arecorded conversation. Dawan Landry . You can watch it live on TSN, TSN.ca and TSN GO at at 2pm et/11am pt. The news conference is a clear sign NBA Commissioner Adam Silver - in the first real crisis of his short tenure - is both following through on his plan to move quickly on this matter and adhering to a request from the players union for some sort of resolution in short order. The Clippers host Golden State in Game 5 of their Western Conference first round series on Tuesday night in Los Angeles. "He should not continue owning the clippers," Lakers star KobeBryant wrote Monday on Twitter. Fallout from the Sterling scandal continued Monday, with CarMax -- the nations largest retailer of used vehicles -- ending its sponsorship of the team. The company said in a statement it finds the statements attributed to Sterling "completely unacceptable." "While we have been a proud Clippers sponsor for nine years and support the team, fans and community, these statements necessitate that CarMax end its sponsorship," it explained. Portions of the recordings were released over the weekend by TMZ and Deadspin. Silvers first step in the process was to authenticate that Sterlings voice is on the tape, and while the NBA has not confirmed that it is, Sterlings wife attributed the comments to her husband. "Our family is devastated by the racist comments made by my estranged husband," Rochelle Sterling said in a statement sent KABC-TV in Los Angeles. "My children and I do not share these despicable views or prejudices. We will not let one mans small mindedness poison the spirit of the fans and accomplishments of the team in the city we love. We are doing everything in our power to stand by and support our Clippers team." Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, the former NBA All-Star who is serving as an adviser to the National Basketball Players Association while the Sterling matter plays out, called it "a massive distraction" to the league. What Silver will do remains unclear. He works for the owners -- and so far that group seems to have no sympathy for Sterlings latest controversy. Among those who have spoken out publicly to condemn the alleged Sterling remarks: Washingtons Ted Leonsis, Miamis Micky Arison and perhaps most notably, Charlottes MichaelJordan, who won six NBA titles as a player. "Im obviously disgusted that a fellow team owner could hold such sickening and offensive views," Jordan said in a statement released Sunday. "Im confident that Adam Silver will make a full investigation and take appropriate action quickly." Silvers tenureas commissioner began on Feb. 1, replacing the retired David Stern. Silver met with Kevin Johnson on Sunday and heard five things that the players union wants from the commissioner. Thelist includes: - Sterlingnot attending any NBA games for the rest of the playoffs because of the "enormous distraction." - A full account of past allegations of discrimination by Sterling and why the league never sanctioned him. - An explanation of the range of penalties the league could bring against Sterling. - Assurance the NBA and the union will be partners in the investigation. - A decisive ruling. "Hes got to come down hard," Hall of Fame player Magic Johnson, who was referenced on the audio recording, said Sunday on ABC. The NBA constitution is not public, though its understood the commissioners powers are broad when it comes to dealing with matters deemed "prejudicial or detrimental to the best interests of basketball." A fine, a suspension, a demand for sensitivity training, all those and more are surely at Silvers disposal. Meanwhile, more audio may be coming. An employee in the office of attorney Mac E. Nehoray, who represents the woman allegedly on the tape, said the full recording lasts about an hour. The clips released by TMZ and Deadspin are significantly shorter than that. The attorneys office also insists that the recording is legitimate and that Sterling is the man on the tape. Also on Sunday, the NAACP announced on Twitter that Sterling will not be receiving a lifetime achievement award from the LA Branch of the NAACP." Sterling had been slated to receive the honour May 15 as part of the 100th anniversary celebration of the groups Los Angeles chapter. Some players feel for the magnitude of the task Silver is facing. "What, hes been three months on the job? And he has to deal with an issue like this," Washingtons GarrettTemple said. "Its unfair to him. ... Its going to be a difficult situation for him to take care of, and hes probably going to act swiftly as he said. And he needs to do so. Its a very tough issue. A lot of different sides. But its more than basketball." Sterling has been the subject of many past controversies, but this, particularly at playoff time and with his own team a potential title contender, has perhaps generated more outcry than the others combined. Even President Barack Obama addressed the issue Sunday at a news conference in Malaysia. The next move will be made by Silver, and Tuesday apparently is the day. "This is a defining moment for the league," Kevin Johnson said. "Its a defining moment for the commissioner." AP Sports Writers Antonio Gonzalez and Joseph White and Associated Press Writer John Rogers contributed to this report. Antwan Barnes . With his team trailing the Cleveland Indians by 13 runs in the ninth inning, the Blue Jays utility infielder came off the bench to make his big league pitching debut and secure the final out. DBrickashaw Ferguson .m. Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Colorado last played at Crew Stadium on Nov. 6 last year, suffering possibly the best loss in club history, as the Rapids won an ensuing penalty kick shootout to snap an aggregate tie in the playoffs.Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Dear Kerry, I was watching the fourth goal for the Islanders in the game against the Leafs, it seemed the Leafs goalie Bernier had the puck covered and the referee blew the whistle raised his arms in the air to signal the play was dead and then moments later signaled good goal. On the overhead replay, you could see the puck cross the line before the whistle, however it seems to me that the referee thought the puck was covered and intended to blow the play dead as he blew the whistle before ever seeing the puck free. Would this fall under the intent to blow the play dead under Rule 31.2: "As there is a human factor involved in blowing the whistle to stop play, the Referee may deem the play to be stopped slightly prior to the whistle actually being blown. The fact that the puck may come loose or cross the goal line prior to the sound of the whistle has no bearing if the referee has ruled that the play had been stopped prior to this happening." Look forwards to hearing your take on the play. Jordan Anstey --- Hi Kerry, I have a question regarding the Leaf/Islanders game. The Islanders just tied the game 4-4 on a questionable goal, in my opinion. The puck was never frozen by Bernier, as it rolled across the goal line. The referee at the crease blew his whistle, waved it dead and then immediately pointed to the puck in the net. How on earth can you blow the play dead and then reverse it? That shouldnt have counted! Please correct me if I am wrong. Best Regards,Dale Jordan and Dale: Referee Denis LaRue did everything correctly from the moment he attacked the net with speed and eventually located the puck across the goal line the goal line behind JonathanBernier. Any evidence or question of the referees "intent to blow the whistle" would have resulted from the fact that he could not see the puck as he approached the net and therefore might have assumed it was frozen under Berniers equipment (puck out of sight). The referee demonstrated patience in not blowing the whistle pre-maturely as he continued on a path toward the goal crease in an effort to find the puck. OOnce referee LaRue got to the net he did in fact locate the puck across the goal line almost simultaneously with his decision to kill the play. Muhammad Wilkerson. This visual picture was quickly processed and abruptly changed any thought he might have had that the puck was frozen. The puck in the net was now a reality for the referee. As such, Denis LaRues hands immediately went from the field goal position signaling "play is dead" to pointing into the net signaling that a legal goal had been scored! This visual evidence demonstrated and confirmed to the referee that the puck had entered the net prior to his whistle and any "intent" he might have had to blow the play dead. It is somewhat speculative to assume the puck is frozen just because you dont see it. Definitive evidence is presented whenever the referee sees the puck across the goal line. A legal goal must be based on that evidence. Far too many times I have seen referees misjudge plays in and around the goal crease when they remained stationary in the corner or kept an obstructed view without moving their feet. Had it not been for LaRues quick reaction this could have been just another one of those unfortunate times. On the play TravisHamonics shot from the point was deflected by CarlGunnarsson and picked up behind the goal line half way to the corner by RyanStrome. This altered puck position forced the referee to retreat to the corner just ahead of the goal line. Strome then threw the puck to the front of the net and it was redirected by AndersLee between Berniers pads. Rather than remain in the corner, Referee LaRue read the situation and reacted without hesitation by sprinting to the net on angle that allowed him to avoid Nazim Kadri and RyanStrome. En route to the net the refs inability to immediately locate the puck, along with his instinct and experience might have caused him to think the puck was underneath JonathanBernier. LaRues patience with the whistle and his quick footed attack toward the net to locate the puck behind Bernier resulted in the correct call to allow the goal scored by AndersLee to stand. In this situation the referee demonstrated a text book attack of the net in order to render the correct call. ' ' '

CHARLOTTE, N. Matt Moore Womens Jersey .C. -- LeBronJames called comments on an audio recording of a man identified as Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling "appalling" and said hes not sure if he would suit up for the remainder of the NBA playoffs if he played for the Clippers. "Theres no room for Donald Sterling in the NBA -- there is no room for him," the Heat forward said Saturday night before a playoff game against the Charlotte Bobcats. The league said Saturday it was investigating the recording posted on TMZs website, calling the comments "disturbing and offensive." James said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver should take swift action if the comments are found to be made by Sterling. "Obviously, if the reports are true its unacceptable in our league," James said. "It doesnt matter, white, black or Hispanic -- all across the races its unacceptable. As the commissioner of our league they have to make a stand. They have to be very aggressive with it. I dont know what it will be, but we cant have that in our league. "Were the model citizen of all sports around the world because we are the most recognizable figures. ... Its very disrespectful and its appalling." One of James best friends, ChrisPaul, plays for the Clippers. James said he hasnt spoken with Paul, but "I can only imagine what is going through his head." "I have kind of wavered back and forth if I would actually sit out," James said. "If our owner would come out and say the things he said I would have to sit down with my teammates and talk to my family because at the end of the day, our family and teammates are way more important than that,. Basketball is huge and the playoffs have been unbelievable so far and I hate that something has to come out." In the recording, the man on the recorder questions his girlfriends association with minorities. James said hes not angry about the comments, just disappointed. "I can only imagine if a player came out and said something of that stature what would happen to us as players," James said. "I believe in Adam (Silver) and I believe in the NBA and they have to do something very fast before this really gets out of hand. But like I said there is no room for Donald Sterling in our league." PSG could have clinched the title this weekend if Monaco lost and it won on Sunday at Lyon. For now, Monaco pulled within 10 points of the leader. Emmanuel Riviere chased a through ball from Jeremy Toulalan to score with a sliding effort in the 55th minute.MANCHESTER, England - Ryan Giggs path to becoming the most durable and decorated player of the English Premier League era can be traced back almost 32 years, to the moment his precocious talents were spotted by a milkman on a muddy school pitch in north-west Manchester. Mike Daniels Packers Jersey . "He was just like a gazelle, flying up the wing," recalled Dennis Schofield, who happened to also be a scout at Manchester City. "I thought, Flipping heck, hes good this kid." Giggs was just 8 at the time, but his close control, pace and skills had Schofield salivating. "He is the most outstanding player Ive seen at that age, even now. Like Stanley Matthews," Schofield, now 82, told The Associated Press. Three decades on and the comparison with Matthews could not be more apt. Like the England great, who played top-level football until he was 50, Giggs longevity is going down in folklore. On Friday, the Manchester United midfielder turned 40. His hair is thinning and greying, his turn of pace isnt what it was, and he is used more sparingly by the English champions, where he is now also part of the coaching staff under manager David Moyes. But Giggs the player is showing no sign of decline. From central midfield, he was the driving force behind Uniteds devastating 5-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday in the Champions League, club footballs top and most intense competition. He played 90 minutes, too. And dont be surprised to see him featuring for United against Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday. That would be his 953rd club appearance, all coming for United since his debut in 1991. "I dont know what the younger lads think of me," Giggs said. "When I was 17 and 18, I thought 31 was ancient. Here I am, at 40." Teddy Sheringham, Kevin Phillips (who is still playing in the top flight for Crystal Palace) and Gordon Strachan are the only other outfield footballers to have played in the Premier League in their fifth decade. But none of the trio performed at the elite level throughout their careers as Giggs has done and no one has come near his haul of titles and medals. The list keeps growing: 13 Premier Leagues, four FA Cups, three League Cups, two Champions Leagues, one UEFA Super Cup, an Intercontinental Cup and a Club World Cup. He is the only player to have scored a goal in every Premier League season, has the most appearances in the Champions League (148), and played 1,021 professional games for club and country. His solo goal in the FA Cup semifinal replay against Arsenal in 1999, where he set off from inside his own half, jinked round three defenders and slammed a shot into the roof of the net, has gone down as one of the greatest goals in English football. Giggs doesnt ssee himself quitting any time soon, either.Eddie Lacy Packers Jersey. Since turning 30, he has undertaken regular yoga sessions, which is an accepted method of keeping in shape even if, years ago, it earned funny looks in the macho world of football. He has also refined his game, playing deeper in midfield rather than on the wings. He relies on speed of thought rather than the speed of his legs, and he is way ahead of the rest. "Hes an unbelievable footballer," Moyes said, "and is even getting better." Tributes to Giggs poured in from across the country on Friday. Moyes said he "undoubtedly" the leagues best ever player and former teammate Mark Hughes now manager at Stoke said the success Giggs has had "wont be replicated by anyone." "Maybe he is like a good Bordeaux (wine)," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger mused, "he gets better as he gets older." Schofield believes the natural fitness Giggs is blessed with means he could go on for another four of five years and he has been right about the Welshman before. Schofield recalls his chance first encounter with Giggs as if it was yesterday. "I was on my milkfloat this day and all these kids came out of school," he said in a phone interview. "I said, Are you going playing? and they said, Yeah, just down the road. "So I parked my milkfloat up and went and watched them. They kicked off and this young lad, 8 years old, playing on the left wing. My, he had some pace on him, good control. Everything." Schofield spoke to Giggs mother, who was watching on the touchline, and invited the youngster to train with a local team, Deans. He spent years nurturing Giggs, taking him on tours to the Isle of Wight where, Schofield reminisces, "parents left their own teams, their own kids who were playing, to come across and watch Ryan play." Then came the moment Schofield has forever regretted. "I got him down to Man City and told the chief scout, When he is 14, youd better be down at his house because there will be quite a few clubs knocking on his door. He told me not to worry, that (Giggs) father has shaken hands on it and will sign for us. "Well, on that morning he was 14, the only people who were at his house were Alex Ferguson and (former United scout) Joe Brown. They signed him on. Our chief scout was still sat in his office, waiting for him to come down to City. And the rest is history." Citys loss was Uniteds gain and 26 years later, Giggs is still ramming that message home. "I still enjoy training, the buzz before the game, the buzz when we win," Giggs told The Times of London. "As long as that lasts, Ill carry on." ' ' '

Letroy Guion Packers Jersey . -- About two hours after YoenisCespedes made a defensive play for the ages, CollinCowgill decided not to watch while the Oakland left fielder chased after his long drive in the 14th inning.NEW YORK -- DirkNowitzki called it "probably the ugliest game-winner I ever shot," and this is how he described it. "Basically it hit the board, every part of the rim, hit Jerry West over there (the logo on the backboard), came back over and it was definitely an ugly, ugly shot," he said. But when the 19-foot jumper bounced up and then fell in as time expired, the Dallas Mavericks had a 110-108 victory over the New York Knicks on Monday night. The Mavericks blew an eight-point lead in the final 90 seconds, then pulled out their third straight victory when Nowitzkis jumper that seemed to have missed instead fell through. "I didnt even feel like celebrating it was so ugly," Nowitzki said. His teammates and Mavericks owner Mark Cuban did it for him, rushing onto the floor after Dallas moved into seventh place in the Western Conference. CarmeloAnthony had 44 points and nine rebounds for the Knicks. He played strong defence on the Mavericks final possession, but was left standing in disbelief long after the buzzer after Nowitzkis shot appeared to hit the backboard first, then the front rim, then bounced up before dropping. "It was like a needle in a balloon right there," Anthony said. "It sucks all the air out of you. He hit a hell of a shot." VinceCarter made seven three-pointers and scored a season-high 23 points. MontaEllis had 22 for Dallas (35-23), which has won nine of 11 and is a season-best 12 games over .500. JoseCalderon finished with 20 points for the Mavericks, who swept a three-game road trip and beat the Knicks for the 20th time in the last 25 meetings. Nowitzki had just 15 points after missing all five three-point attempts. "Thats one thing about the greatest players. I played with (Larry) Bird for three years. He took more pleasure in hitting a game-winning shot after he missed eight or nine in a row than having a great game at times," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. TysonChandler had 12 points and 12 rebounds against his former team, sparking the Knicks comeback after they trailed 108-100 with 1:37 left. But New York (21-36) lost for the sixth time in seven games and fell a season-worst 15 games below .500. The Knicks had blown big leads in their last two games, giving away a 14-point advantage at Orlando and a 17-point cushion at Atlanta, collapses that coach Mike Woodson called "mind-boggling. Donald Driver Packers Jersey. quot; This one had to hurt worse. "There were games last year when our backs were against the wall and we just found a way to win," Woodson said. "This year when weve been in the situation where we needed a big stop or two we havent been able to get it done." The Mavericks seemed to have put it away when Calderon made a three-pointer, and BrandanWright followed with a basket to stretch the late lead to eight points. But after RaymondFeltons basket, Chandler converted a three-point play, then came up with a steal to start a break that ended with Anthonys three-pointer that tied it at 108 with 50 seconds remaining. The Knicks got the ball back after a Dallas miss but committed a shot-clock violation, giving Dallas the ball for Nowitzkis winner. "We maybe shouldnt be in the situation at the end, I think six points up," Calderon said. "It was a good lead with 1:20 or something, but it was good at the end." Amare Stoudemire scored nine points in his first start since the end of the 2011-12 season for the Knicks, who had just 10 available players after waiving MettaWorldPeace and BenoUdrih earlier Monday following contract buyouts. The Mavericks shot 55 per cent and led 31-21 after one quarter, but the Knicks came right back and made 14 of 19 shots (74 per cent) while scoring 38 points in the second, when Anthony scored 17 points. New York erased a 14-point deficit to grab a two-point lead on Anthonys jumper with 11 seconds left, but Ellis made a three-pointer as time expired to give Dallas a 60-59 edge. Dallas had the lead back up to eight in the final minute of the third, but Anthony made three free throws, then nailed a three-pointer with 0.6 seconds remaining as the Knicks trimmed it to 84-82. NOTES: Woodson said he would talk with team president Steve Mills on Tuesday to discuss filling the teams open roster spots. He said he thought the Knicks needed a big man with AndreaBargnani and KenyonMartin still injured, and a guard who could defend on the perimeter. ... The crowd included U.S. Olympian Erin Hamlin, who won a bronze medal in luge, and Super Bowl-winning quarterback Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks. ' ' '

Each week, The Reporters put their thumbs out to the good and the bad in the world of sports. Buccaneers #87 Jersey . This week they discuss the retirement of Doug Brown, the emergence of Tristan Thompson, the end of the PGA Tours Qualifying School and the Toronto Blue Jays. Bruce Arthur, National Post: My thumb is up to Doug Brown, the mountainous Winnipeg Blue Bombers defensive lineman, who is retiring just as his team comes apart at the seams, on twitter and otherwise. Brown was a seven-time All-Star, the CFLs Most Outstanding Canadian in 2001, and the victim of some bad luck - his 2007 team arrived at the Grey Cup without its injured quarterback, and his first and last teams, which made the 2001 and 2011 Grey Cups, just werent quite good enough. But Brown conducted himself with loyalty and dignity, and was an immensely thoughtful and honest man. The final image: him fighting tears in front of his locker, in full uniform. The next one: him as a great broadcaster, wherever he lands. Steve Simmons, Sun Media: My thumb is up to Tristan Thompson of Brampton, Ontario, the fourth pick in last Junes NBA Draft, for having a breakout game in just his second starting assignment with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Thompson, who wasnt supposed to be able to score, wound up with 27 points and 12 rebounds - a combination that no one on the Toronto Raptors has matched yet this season. And its just not Thompson; if you look at the tournament, youll see Ontario kids like Brady Heslip knocking down threes for Baylor, displaying the emerging Canadian talent in the game. So in a different kind of way, maybe Don Cherrys not far off. Maybe the problem with the Raptors is: not enough Ontario kids on the team. Michael Farber, Sports Illustrated: My thumb is down to the impending death of the PGA Tours Qualifying School, the grandest drama this side of Hamlet. Starting in 2013, the PGA will switch to a qualifying system involving only the Nationwide Tour, making that Triple A loop the lone path to a PGA card. For the sloggers on the Canadian tour, who survived the arduous qualifying process and jumped directly to the big leagues well, sorry. For one last year, the six-round Q-School final will be the finest crucible in sports. Players arent playing for their lives but for their livelihoods - or at least a chance to earn them. Darwinian perfection; no revamped system will ever be more compelling. Dave Hodge, TSN: Never mind the idea that spring training results mean nothing, Im saying thumbs up to the Blue Jays for their pre-season-best 18 victories....and only four losses. But if you need another reason to be optimistic about their chances in 2012, here it is. Outfielder Travis Snider and pitcher Kyle Drabek are two players who are always mentioned when the Jays future is discussed. Odds are, they will not be on the major-league roster when the season starts, and yes, Im counting that as good news. Snider and Drabek are performing well, they just cant crack the lineup yet, and that must say something about the team the Jays will field this year, and in the coming years. Buccaneers #93 Jersey . -- JoeThornton and PatrickMarleau found the perfect way to celebrate their new contract extensions. Buccaneers #12 Jersey . Rose played about 10 minutes Monday night in New Jersey, and coach Tom Thibodeau declined to say for certain before tipoff whether the NBA MVP would play in New Orleans. Rose is averaging nearly 23 points and eight assists for Chicago, which has entered its game against the Hornets on a three-game winning streak and with the most victories (21) in the NBA.DETROIT -- Boston Bruins forward JaromeIginla is sitting out against the Detroit Red Wings because of a lower-body injury. Iginla sat out Wednesday night after playing in the Bruins first 75 games this season. He leads the team with 30 goals and is second with 61 points. Boston has already clinched the Atlantic Division title. The Red Wings kept forward DanielAlfredssson out of the lineup because of a lower-body injury. Evan Dietrich-Smith Buccaneers Jersey. He has 17 goals and 45 points in 63 games during his first season with Detroit. Red Wings forward PavelDatsyuk skated with teammates Wednesday morning, but missed his 16th straight game because of an injured left knee. Datsyuk wouldnt say if he expected to play Friday at home against Buffalo. ' ' '

CHICAGO Moral victories count for nothing at this point in the season. Will Montgomery . The Leafs effort may have improved considerably in a 5-4 loss to the Blackhawks on Wednesday night, but the result was ultimately the same: nothing gained, just the 10th loss in the last 11 games (1-9-1). "Its not really the time of year where theres any silver lining," JoffreyLupul told TSN.ca following the game. "We dont sit around after the game and say Oh, we played good." "Its all about just getting the two points. Right now, we need a win, whatever way we can get it, we need a win." Plagued by poor starts in recent weeks, the Leafs stormed out of the gate at the United Center, jumping ahead 3-1 on goals from TylerBozak, Lupul and ClarkeMacArthur. The Blackhawks cut the margin in half with 30 clicks left in the opening frame and then raced past their original six rivals for good with two goals in a three and a half minute spurt in the second. RayEmery did the rest, relieving CoreyCrawford with 23 saves in the final two periods. "No excuses," a frustrated LukeSchenn said afterward. "Were just not getting the job done." "Whether you want to say were not playing great defensively or not chipping in the powerplay, penalty kill, scoring goals, whatever it is, just bottom line were not getting the job done and its frustrating." "It feels terrible," added Lupul. "You never want to go on a skid like this, but especially not at this time of year." "We were saying we wanted to get the lead and then we got the lead tonight and we couldnt do the job. Its definitely a frustrating feeling." With just one win in the final three and a half weeks in February, the Leafs enter March four points back of the Capitals for the final playoff spot in the East. They have another critical matchup on deck with the Habs in Montreal on Saturday. "There is enough time," Lupul said of the teams 18 remaining games. "Maybe not because [of] what were doing, but other teams are losing too so were still right there and again we need to get one game, regroup and try and put a little run together." Five Points 1. The Leafs lead evaporated in a stretch of three minutes and 33 seconds in the second period as a series of miscues in the defensive zone lead to goals from PatrickKane and MarianHossa. "We lost our coverage along the boards two times and they were able to walk right down the middle," head coach Ron Wilson said. "We have to do a better job of stapling people to the boards than we did in the second period. And even the first period we allowed the same thing to happen on two of their goals; they came up with the puck in battle situations where we lost the battle." 2. Struggling in particular on that note was JakeGardiner who was on the ice for three of the first four Chicago goals. The 21-year-old was beaten out of the corner by AndrewShaw on the first goal, outmuscled for a puck along the wall by ViktorStalberg leading to the second goal, and was on for perhaps a bit soft on the fourth goal. All in all, just an off-night for the rookie defenceman, who logged fewer than 17 minutes, his lowest total of the New Year. "Hes been our best defenceman," Wilson said. "Those things are going to happen. But if one guy makes a mistake youve got to have two and three other people in position and in couple of those situations we didnt and a breakdown ensued." 3. Lupul offered an interesting observation on the loss. "Its not making the big play at the big time," he said. "Theres time in the games where youve got to score a goal, make a big play defensively and right now were just not getting it done for whatever reason." 4. Loss after loss has made for a rather excruciating feeling in the Leaf dressing room. "Weve tried having different meetings, not like inspirational, but just better talks among the guys in our dressing room, coaches, everything," Schenn explained. "Today we tried to keep it a little bit looser. We talked about having fun out there and just playing, not worrying about all the systems and everything thats going on around us. Hockeys not a job or work; its a game and were supposed to have fun and just go out there and play and not worry. I think we did that off the start and got off to a good start and a lead obviously. Its tough to see a lead like that slip." Bozaks 14th of the year marked just the second time in the last 10 games the Leafs have scored first. 5. Under considerable scrutiny with his team sliding Wilson deflected any notion of added pressure. "I dont look it as pressure like what you think," he said. "Pressure is when youre fighting for your life and youve got cancer or something like that. This youre trying to win hockey games." The Leafs effort on Wednesday albeit in losing fashion should quash any present notion of a team quitting on its coach. "Tonight I have no argument with the effort," Wilson noted. "When you put an effort like that more than likely youre going to win. Tonight we didnt." Bonus Points JonasGustavsson was solid between the pipes with 30 saves. "I thought he was pretty good," Wilson said. "Chicago plays a scrambly game in front of you and it was difficult, but again we allowed them to come down the pipe a couple times because of mistakes along the wall."MikhailGrabovski failed to score for the 14th consecutive game, though he did notch an assist on MacArthurs 19th of the yearWith the benefit of last change Joel Quenneville was able to match his top unit of Hossa, Kane and AndrewBrunette opposite the Leaf fourth line on both second period goalsMatthewLombardi was a healthy scratch for the first time this seasonSchenn fought BrandonBollig in the second period, his fourth scrap this seasonBozak led all Leaf forwards in ice-time at 20:02, also finishing 14-21 (67%) in the faceoff circle. Bradley Roby . Parker had 22 points in his return from an eight-game absence, TimDuncan added 19 points and 16 rebounds and the San Antonio Spurs escaped with a 104-97 overtime victory against the Utah Jazz on Friday night. Danny Trevathan . United, which is enduring a lacklustre season under new manager David Moyes, dropped to fourth behind European champion Bayern Munich in the Football Money League compiled by accountancy firm Deloitte.PHOENIX -- EricBledsoe scored 15 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter and the Phoenix Suns pulled out a 98-92 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Friday night. GoranDragic added 20 points, 15 in the first half, and MarkieffMorris scored 16 for the Suns. RodneyStuckey scored 23 and AndreDrummond had 13 points and 16 rebounds for the Pistons in their fourth overall loss and 12th straight on the road. Bledsoe, in his biggest game since returning from knee surgery March 12, made a 3-pointer as the shot clock expired to put the Suns ahead for good 89-86 with 3:22 to play. Detroit was just 10 of 26 at the foul line, to Phoenixs 24 of 35. Phoenix outscored Detroit 12-6 over the final 3:22. The victory pulled the Suns within a half-game of Memphis for the eighth and final playoff spot in the West, although the Grizzlies have the tiebreaker. Detroits worst culprit at the foul line was JoshSmith, who had 15 points and 10 rebounds but missed all eight of his free throws. GregMonroe scored 16 for the Pistons. After quickly erasing a 12-point Phoenix lead in the third quarter, Detroit played the Suns close and had an 82-80 lead when Drummond made one of two free throws with 6:31 left. The game was tied three more times before Bledsoe, as the shot clock neared zero, hit a 3 from the top of the key to maake it 89-86. Shannon Sharpe. Monroe made two free throws with 3:02 left to cut it to 89-88, Morris scored on a drive, ChanningFrye blocked KyleSinglers layup try. Morris and Bledsoe each made free throws to put Phoenix up 93-88 with 1:05 to go. WillBynum scored, then Bledsoes driving layup had the Suns ahead 95-90 with 48.9 seconds to play. Neither team led by more than six points in the first half, with Phoenix up 51-50 at the break. Dragic hit a 3 and MilesPlumlee made two free throws to put Phoenix up 51-46 with 1:59 left in the half. Drummonds layup with 1:22 left, followed by his tip-in with 6.8 seconds to go, left the Suns with a one-point halftime lead. Phoenix opened the second half with a 14-3 run to go up 65-53 on Plumlees reverse dunk on a pass from Bledsoe. Plumlee scored seven in the spurt. But Detroit responded, outscoring the Suns 14-2 to tie it at 67-67 when Drummond made one of two free throws with 3:34 left in the quarter. Smith was fouled by Dragic on a 3-point try but missed all three at the line and Phoenix led 73-71 entering fourth. Notes: The Suns MarkieffMorris drew his 12th technical foul, fourth-most in the NBA. ... Detroits last road win was at Washington on Jan. 18. ... The NHL Play of the Year showdowns second round resumes today with a battle of determination and finish. Jeff Saturday Packers Jersey . Todays Round of 16 match-up features Ottawa Senators forward KyleTurris taking on Philadelphia Flyers captain ClaudeGiroux. Turris shows a tremendous individual effort, faking out nearly an entire team. He victimizes the Caps going straight to the net. He barrels over the blue line freezing MikeGreen, who earns a delayed penalty. He then shakes off some harassment from JohnErskine before reaching for some open net with a ridiculous drag that leaves PhilippGrubauer with no chance of stopping the puck. Turris took out perennial contender SidneyCrosby in the opening round, garnering nearly 55 per cent of the vote. Giroux doesnt quite have as far to go on the ice, but given the circumstances unleashes a beauty of a shot. Picking a wild point shot rebound off the end boards, Giroux picks up the disc and gets sent to the ice by DavidSavard. While falling, though, he unleashes one heck of a shot. Falling, he lifts a backhander behind his back towards the net... and roofs it. Its not even like CurtisMcElhinney doesnt expect the shot, Giroux just beats him high glove without even looking. Giroux took out one of his Pennsylvania rivals in the opening round, capturing 54-plus per cent from the Penguins EvgeniMalkin. You can watch the highlights and make your decision here . Brett Favre Packers Jersey . Sung Hyang Sim put North Korea ahead in the 54th minute. Canada, however, maintained pressure and tied the game late off an own goal where Kim Jong Sum put the ball just over her own line in the 86th minute. Ha Ha Clinton-Dix Packers Jersey . -- The Canadian Football League Players Association has elected a new executive committee as it prepares for the next round of labour talks with the league.Hes an NCAA Male Athlete of the Year. Hes defeated numerous MMA superstars. He took one of the most dominant wrestlers in MMA on Monday to a close split decision. He recently walked through one of the most feared welterweights in MFC history. Hes a workhorse. Hes a veteran. Hes Nathan "Soulforce" Coy. Fight fans may not know this guy, but fight fanatics do, and soon you will too. Why? Because hes about to bring the fight like he always does, but this time his fight is at MFC 33 on the grand stage provided by HDNet, TSN, and the Maximum Fighting Championship. Oh, by the way, his fight is also for the welterweight championship belt, which, in a recent interview, Coy stated clearly was in his career goals: "Im looking to win belts." His journey to this title shot hasnt been easy either. The guy has built a career on taking on the toughest fighters in the sport - often before they garnered the glitz and glamour needed to rocket Coy to the top, or even to pay him well for that matter: "Im the guy who beat those fighters before they had legitimate names. It was a lot of tough matches for no money, just for respect." In the McGillivray fight, the man they call Soulforce gets to put his stamp on a high-profile fight, and, like he says, "Its just a matter of making it happen." Thats a relatively easy quote to throw out there, but Coy also realizes his work is cut out for him. His opponent, Ryan McGillivray, clutched his last victory from what looked like the jaws of defeat when he pulled an out-of-nowhere armbar on the highly aggressive Diego Bautista. Coy knows that fight, and he knows what McGillivray brings to the cage, so he must see that Ryan has a shot at winning their bout, right? "No, not at all," said Coy, "Im in this business to win and win only." With affiliation to Team Quest in Portland and American Top Team in Florida,, hes surrounded by winning attitudes and the talent needed to prepare him for McGillivrays excellent submission game. Eddie Lacy Packers Jersey. When asked about it, Coy was completely confident in himself and his training partners, "Ive got guys who can match that." Its hard to argue the quality of his training camps or his skills after watching him dismantle Dhiego Lima at MFC 32. Lima is a feared competitor, and now Coy may be the most feared welterweight on the MFC roster. He doesnt care about fear though, only victory: "I want to get after it and put people in positions theyre not comfortable in. If thats fear, then so be it." Of course, its going to be hard to shake the confidence of his opponent, who will have the home crowd support behind him in spades. As far as Nathan Coy is concerned, Ryan McGillivray can go ahead and have the fan support in the arena: "The crowd has nothing to do with it." He may well be right. We are, after all, talking about a fighter who is extremely focused and on a path of constant and consistent improvement. Take a look at the list of fighters hes already defeated. Improvement is a scary thought, especially considering the dominance shown in his last fight: "I impose my will. Thats the goal when Im out there." Imposing is a great word to describe Coy. Hes big. Hes forceful. Hes persistent. In fact, hes much like a fighting mountain gorilla: "A gorilla grabs you. It hurts you. It does what it wants." To be fair to the man, he is also a loving father and husband who is thankful to his supporters and all the fans who buy tickets to the MFC, but you can hear it in the tone of his voice - his message to Ryan McGillivray isnt loving or thankful, but more like a dare for which he already knows the outcome: "Come after it, man. Come hard. Lets do this." ' ' '

SALT LAKE CITY -- GordonHayward had 17 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists to lead a balanced Utah Jazz offence in a 109-86 win over the slumping Phoenix Suns on Wednesday night. Bart Starr Packers Jersey . RichardJefferson scored 17 points and DianteGarrett had a career-high 15 points as the Jazz had seven players with 10 points or more in Utahs largest margin of victory this season. The Jazz shot 57.5 per cent from the field, the highest mark of any Phoenix opponent this season. GeraldGreen had 17 points and rookie ArchieGoodwin matched his career-best with 16 for the Suns. Playing their only road game in a nine-game stretch, the Suns have been looking to improve their playoff position. However, with a third straight loss, Phoenix leads Memphis by just one-half game the eighth and final Western Conference berth. Hayward, mired in a shooting slump (31 per cent in his previous 13 games), made plays all over the court in this one. Some fans chanted to put Hayward back in the game to get his first-ever triple-double. He just smiled as he watched the Jazz play the last 6:15 of the runaway win. GoranDragic did not dress due to a sprained ankle and the Suns missed his playmaking abilities. Dragic twisted his right ankle in the third quarter in a loss to Minnesota on Tuesday and will have the injury re-evaluated on Thursday. IshSmith had 13 points and five assists but the Jazz didnt respect his outside shooting and the defence wasnt spread like it would have been with Dragic. The Suns were 6 of 19 on 3-pointers. The Jazz turned a five-point lead into a 72-57 advantage thanks a 12-2 run and a 5:08 stretch where they held the Suns without a field goal. The Jazz broke it open in the fourth quarter as Garrett showed the skills he wished the Suns could have seen last season. Garrett was a late pickup for the Jazz this season after playing 19 games for Phoenix in 2012-13. Garrett had 11 points in the first five minutes of the fourth period to push the Jazz lead to 95-73. Derrick Favours scored 15 points in his second game back from a hip injury and AlecBurks scored 15 and JeremyEvans had 11 in reserve roles. The Jazz outscored the Suns 50-36 in the paint and were equally adept from beyond the arc, making 9 of 18 attempts. After allowing a 35-point fourth quarter against the Timberwolves on Tuesday, the Suns defence was again porous against the Jazz. Utah players often beat their Phoenix counterparts down the courts and were one step quicker to the hoop on drives. Though the Jazz are buried near the bottom of the Western Conference standings, the starting lineup of Jefferson, MarvinWilliams, Favors, Hayward and TreyBurke improved to 18-9 on the season. NOTES: Morris got a technical in the third quarter for yelling at official Zach Zarba after he was called for a foul on Jeffersons attempted dunk. ... The Suns largest lead was one point. ... The Jazz outscored the Suns in every quarter. ... Utahs previous biggest win this season was in a 122-101 victory at Sacramento on Dec. 11. ... Phoenix coach Jeff Hornacek played for the Jazz from 1994-2000 and served as an assistant coach with Utah from 2011-13. His No. 14 jersey number hangs in the rafters. Packers #75 Jersey . -- Minnesota Vikings cornerback ChrisCook has been fined $26,250 for contact with an official, per NFL guidelines. Mason Crosby Packers Jersey . David Hunter and Nick Sorensen had a goal and an assist apiece for Quebec (34-15-9), Francois Godin, and Fabrice Herzog also scored, and Adam Chapman added an empty netter with two seconds left in the game. The results are in. Take a look at TSN.cas first ever Readers Votes mock draft. With the first pick in the draft the readers had the Houston Texans selecting the exciting and energetic JohnnyManziel. Following Manziel is JadeveonClowney going to the St. Myles White Packers Jersey. Louis Rams, Teddy Bridgewater to the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Blake Bortles to the Cleveland Browns. NFL Editior Ben Fisher also compiled a mock draft to go alongside the readers votes. Go to TSN.ca to see both full mock drafts. ' ' '

(SportsNetwork. Saints #8 Jersey .com) - The Calgary Flames aim to bounce back from their first regulation home loss of the campaign on Friday night when they host a Detroit Red Wings club that they swept in three meetings a season ago. The Flames have split the first two of a three-game homestand, besting the Washington Capitals last Saturday before falling by a 4-2 score to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday. MattStajan and DavidJones had goals and KarriRamo stopped 18-of-21 shots, but Leafs netminder JonathanBernier came up with 41 saves. Calgary has lost three of four and five of its last seven overall, falling to 3-1-1 at home on the season. "I felt that we had a good game. We are not very pleased with the result but I dont know what we could have done more. Offensively we generated a lot. Our forechecking was good. Our puck decisions in the offensive zone were very good but Bernier basically stole the game away from us," said Calgary coach Bob Hartley. Ramo was making his third straight start and former Red Wings netminder JoeyMacDonald is expected to face his old club tonight. MacDonald spent two seasons in Detroit before getting claimed off waivers by Calgary on Feb. 11. The 33-year-old has faced the Red Wings just once prior, notching a 42-save shutout on March 27, 2009 while with the New York Islanders. The Flames outscored the Red Wings 12-5 in winning all three meetings last season, winning twice at home. Detroit has lost three of its past four in Calgary, but is coming off a 2-1 win over Vancouver on Wednesday that began a four-game road trip. The Red Wings are 4-2-0 as the guest this season. DanielAlfredsson scored in a second straight game and TomasTatar notched his first goal of the season for the Red Wings, who snapped a four-game slide (0-2-2). JimmyHoward made 19 saves. "Ive got to give the guys a lot of credit tonight," Howard said. "They did a great job in front of me." PatrickEaves made his season debut after missing the first 12 games due to a sprained knee and ankle injury, while JohanFranzen missed Wednesdays contest with an undisclosed injury. Franzen is likely to return tonight and has logged just two goals and three assists in 12 games. Howard is 7-5-0 with a 2.66 GAA in 12 career meetings with the Flames, while backup JonasGustavsson is 0-4-0 with a 4.61 GAA in five encounters. Detroit is scheduled to visit Edmonton on Saturday and Gustavsson could get the start in that game given his past history versus Calgary. He is 3-0-0 with a 2.13 GAA in four games (3 starts) overall this season. Morten Andersen Saints Jersey . Bortles, one of three quarterbacks vying to be the first taken in the NFL Draft in May alongside Bridgewater and JohnnyManziel, helped his cause by impressing scouts with a clean performance at the UCF Pro Day Wednesday, according to reports. Marques Colston Saints Jersey . Michell Burger, a woman who lives on an estate next to Pistorius gated community, said she and her husband were awoken by the screams in the pre-dawn hours of Feb. 14 last year, when Pistorius killed Reeva Steenkamp by shooting four times through a door in his bathroom.VANCOUVER -- The Vancouver Whitecaps may have been buoyed by their performance in a goal-less draw away to the San Jose Earthquakes last weekend, but the teams coaches werent leaving anything to chance. Head coach Martin Rennie and his assistants were not impressed with what they saw at a practice on Wednesday, and they laid down the law before Vancouver departed for yet another must-win clash on the road to the Montreal Impact. With six games remaining, the playoff hopes of the seventh-placed Whitecaps (10-10-8) are hanging by a thread at the moment, as the club sits five points behind fifth-placed Portland, who are scheduled to face Colorado on Friday. "Rennie is just making sure we stay on top of our game," said Whitecaps captain Jay DeMerit. "It wasnt the best performance weve had all year but its something we can build on and we need to make sure on the training field that it continues to stem from that. "So I think for us its about being hard on each other, being critical in the right ways and making sure we all stay on the same page." Rennie felt he had to read his players the Riot Act after noticing a drop in intensity and focus from Saturday. "I think in the last game all the players were making themselves available to get on the ball and we kept good possession because of that and everybody was lively and hungry," he said. "And today in training it wasnt as good as wed have liked so I was just pointing that out and reminding people what we need to get to for the weekend." Rennie and midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker believed last weekends match in California was their best road performance of the season but the Impact (13-8-6) will no doubt present a tougher challenge. Montreal, second in the Eastern Conference, have had no trouble finding the back of the net at Stade Saputo this season, amassing a league-high 29 goals on home turf. Marco Schallibaums outfit had recorded three wins (two of them emphatic 5-0 and 4-2 wins over Houston and New England respectively) and a draw before falling 2-1 to lowly Columbus last weekend. The Impact then lost 3-0 away to San Jose in the CONCACAF Champions League on Tuesday night. Italian striker Marco Di Vaio was deadly in that five-ggame MLS span, scoring seven goals to lift his season tally to a league-best 18. Joe Morgan Saints Jersey. Luckily for the Whitecaps, Rennie -- perhaps for the first time since the beginning of a season -- finally has a range of options in central defence to choose from now that DeMerit has returned to game action and Andy OBrien (back) and Johnny Leveron (calf) are both available. DeMerit was forced into last weekends game after 31 minutes when Brad Rusin went down with an ankle injury and he partnered up with Carlyle Mitchell. It was DeMerits first appearance since suffering an Achilles injury early in the opening game of the season against Toronto FC on March 2. Although Rennie said it would take a "team effort" to stop Di Vaio, he was nonetheless excited about having more resources at his disposal. "Maybe we can play all four of them in centre back," he joked. "This season weve really had a hard time with our centre-backs getting hurt so the fact that we have a little bit of competition in a position is nice and I think it can be important because if you keep struggling through that, then its a hard thing. "A lot of people probably dont realize how much of a foundation the centre-backs are to any team and we have not had a consistent partnership there but I think in the last game Jay and Carlyle Mitchell did very well." Rennie has had no injury issues up front in recent times, but the lack of goals from Kenny Miller and Camilo is starting to hurt the teams playoff hopes. The pair have not scored since the 2-0 win over San Jose at BC Place on August 10, which was Vancouvers last win. Miller says he isnt fazed by the dry spell engulfing him and his Brazilian teammate, but hinted a little help from the rest of the team would be welcome. "Sometimes with strike partnerships they kind of dovetail and maybe one guy might not be scoring but the other guy does," said Miller. "And when the other guy dries up the other guy can pick the baton up, but unfortunately for us its not quite working that way. "But its a team game, we defend as a team, we attack as a team and if the strikers arent getting goals, its up to other lads to come in and chip in with a few." ' ' '

MILWAUKEE -- O. Rob Ninkovich Womens Jersey .J.Mayo and GaryNeal put on a long-range shooting display, but it was CaronButlers little 2-foot tip-in that made the difference for the Milwaukee Bucks. Butler rebounded a miss by Mayo with 24.8 seconds left for the go-ahead basket that halted a 13-point run by the Cleveland Cavaliers, propelling the short-handed Bucks to a 109-104 victory Wednesday night. "Ive been around long enough," Butler said. "I just know a plays not over at the end of the game, thats when guys kind of put their guard down a little bit. I saw a great opportunity to sneak in there and put my hand on the ball." Mayo scored 28 points, including six 3-pointers, and Neal, who added four 3-pointers, scored 12 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter as the Bucks salvaged a victory after seeing a double-digit lead slip away in the final 3 minutes. Milwaukee, already without its top two point guards -- BrandonKnight and LukeRidnour -- also played without forward ErsanIlyasova and centre LarrySanders. Ilyasova was out with a sore right ankle while Sanders was out with a sprained right thumb, injured in a weekend off-court incident that is being investigated, the Bucks said in a statement. "We were short-handed with no LarrySanders, no Ersan, LukeRidnour and BrandonKnight," Bucks coach Larry Drew said. "For those guys to come out and play like they did, I am very proud of them. I am very proud to coach this group. Weve had to overcome a lot of adversity since the beginning of training camp, dealing with injuries and guys being out. We beat a very good basketball team tonight in Cleveland." The Bucks, who used only eight players, opened the fourth quarter with an 11-2 run to take a 94-81 lead, but KyrieIrving scored 10 consecutive points to fuel a 13-point run that put the Cavaliers up 104-103. After Butlers tip put the Bucks up 105-104, Irving dribbled off his foot and out of bounds. Mayo added four free throws in the closing seconds. "Crucial turnover by me at the end and it kind of stopped that," said Irving, who led Cleveland with 29 points. "A missed shot by me as well. It starts on the defensive end early in the game. Weve just got to get stops early, so were not in that predicament going into the fourth quarter." Neither team put on a defensive clinic in the first half that ended with the Bucks leading 55-53. Cleveland, which entered the game shooting 40.2 per cent from the field, shot 56.4 per cent in the first half, making 22 of 39 shots. The Bucks, who entered the game shooting 43.8 per cent, made 20 of 36 (55.6 per cent). "O.J.Mayo and GaryNeal are combined 10 for 12 from the 3-point line and we keep telling our guys to get up in them," Cleveland coach Mike Brown said. "Make them drive, make them drive. No air space, no air space. Make them drive, make them drive. But we continue to close short and allow them to shoot 3s. It is unacceptable." Injuries forced Bucks rookie NateWolters, a second-round draft pick out of South Dakota State, to play 33 minutes. Wolters, who has played at least 29 minutes in each game, finished with nine points, eight rebounds and six assists. "Hes very poised," Mayo said. "I think weve all seen that from day one. I dont think we thought he was going to be put in the hot seat that fast, but like I told him, "Welcome to the NBA. If youre ready, you dont have to get ready." NOTES: Former Bucks G MichaelRedd officially announced his retirement Wednesday night and addressed the crowd from centre court between the first and second quarters. Redd, the 43rd pick in 2000, plyed 11 seasons with the Bucks before finishing his career with Phoenix in 2011-12. Redd, who holds the Bucks record with 57 points in a game, averaged better than 21 points per game for six consecutive seasons before tearing an ACL and MCL in his left knee in 2009-10 and then again the following season. ... Cavaliers F AnthonyBennett, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 draft, connected on a 3-pointer with 9:46 left in the first half for his first NBA basket after starting the season 0 for 15 from the field. . Ilyasova, who missed most of the preseason with a sprained right ankle, was not in uniform due to soreness in the a..nkle. .. Bucks centre ZazaPachulia was 10 for 10 from the free throw line, making him 21 for 21 on the season. Tom Brady Womens Jersey . Backlund took the puck to the net and sent a pass to SeanMonahan, whos shot was stopped by Wild netminder DarcyKuemper. The puck, however, bounced into the air and Backlund batted it down and past Kuemper at 2:25 of extra time. Alfonzo Dennard Jersey . Manning and Manning won. It is a difficult assessment to make when you compare quarterbacks because they actually never compete against each other, so the evaluation is more about how did they compete against themselves and elevate those around them. LOS ANGELES -- JordanLyles got through seven innings on a night when mound opponent JoshBeckett displayed his old All-Star form for eight. TroyTulowitzki and the rest of the Colorado Rockies did the rest against the Dodgers overworked bullpen. CharlieBlackmon hit an RBI single in the 11th inning and the Rockies got home runs from Tulowitzki and CoreyDickerson to beat Los Angeles 5-4 on Friday. CarlosGonzalez also had an RBI during the decisive rally. "We look for Tulo and CarGo to lead us. If they dont go anywhere, we dont go anywhere," Lyles said. "So for us to be good we need them to be good. They are proven players and theyre going to give their best effort every day of the week. Talent-wise, it doesnt get much better that that combo." AdamOttavino took over in the eighth for Lyles as a steady drizzle sent many in the crowd of 44,866 for cover. Ottavino retired the side in order before BooneLogan struck out his first two batters in the ninth -- including MattKemp, who was ejected by umpire Angel Hernandez for arguing a called third strike. It was Kemps seventh career ejection and the Dodgers first this season. The drizzle had turned into a downpour by the 10th. BrandonBarnes pinch-hit for reliever RexBrothers (2-2) with one out in the 11th and doubled against JameyWright (1-1). Left-hander J.P.Howell entered to face the lefty-swinging Blackmon, who came in leading the majors with a .410 average. The leadoff hitter grounded a 2-2 pitch up the middle to drive in the go-ahead run after going hitless in his four previous at-bats against Beckett. NolanArenado followed with a single that extended his career-best hitting streak to 15 games. The Rockies added another run when first baseman AdrianGonzalez threw home on a grounder in front of the bag by CarlosGonzalez and was too late to get Blackmon. JustinMorneau capped the rally with an RBI single against BrandonLeague. Brothers pitched a hitless inning and LaTroyHawkins got three outs for his seventh save after giving up a two-run homer to AdrianGonzalez. Kemp would have been the next batter had he not been tossed. YasielPuig also went deep and had an RBI single for the defending NL West champions,, who are 1-5 in extra-inning games. Bryan Stork Jersey. Beckett allowed two runs and four hits with six strikeouts and no walks, after pitching five scoreless innings in each of his previous two starts. The right-hander, whose first four outings have resulted in no-decisions, hasnt won since beating the Rockies on Sept. 30, 2012, at Los Angeles. "There arent very many easy outs in that lineup, but I got some easier outs on some changeups. That was really the key to keeping them off balance," Beckett said. "Theyre a very good hitting team. Most of their guys usually feel pretty good about themselves, and they should." Beckett was 0-5 with a 5.19 ERA in eight starts last season before sitting out the final five months because of a groin strain and a subsequent bout with thoracic outlet syndrome, a nerve condition that required surgery in July. "I think this was a step in the right direction for me, personally. I wanted to show myself that I could do some things I havent done in a while, like pitching innings," Beckett said. "I mean, I havent been up and down six times in like 400 days. I dont know exactly how many. Thats just a guess." Lyles allowed two runs and six hits, striking out four and walking one. Puig, the second batter Lyles faced, hit the first pitch to centre field for his third home run. Ten of Puigs first 22 big league homers have come on the first pitch. "I dont mind when guys swing early, especially since Im a guy that does a decent job of getting guys to hit the ball on the ground," Lyles said. "I tried to make a good pitch down and away. If I threw a ball, I was fine with it. But I didnt get another chance. I left it over the plate and he put a good swing on it. Hes a strong guy who can put it into the seats." Tulowitzki drove Becketts second pitch of the second inning deep into the left-field pavilion for his fifth of the season. Two batters later, Dickerson hit a first-pitch homer to left-centre. Beckett then retired 17 of his next 18 batters. NOTES: Dodgers ace ClaytonKershaw (back) threw 56 pitches over five innings in a rehab start for Class-A Rancho Cucamonga against visiting Lancaster, allowing a run and two hits with six strikeouts and a walk. The run came on a leadoff homer in the fifth. ' ' '

BARCELONA, Spain -- Neymar scored a Champions League hat trick in a 6-1 rout of Celtic on Wednesday to help Barcelona forget about Lionel Messi -- for one night at least. Will Montgomery . Gerard Pique, Pedro Rodriguez, and Cristian Tello also scored for Group H winners Barcelona, while Giorgos Samara added a late consolation goal for Celtic, which finished last in the group. With Messi sidelined by a hamstring injury, Neymar was finally able to take command of a Barcelona attack which has passed through the boots of the Argentina forward for so many years. On Wednesday at the Camp Nou, it was Neymars feet which did the talking as he finally scored in Europes elite competition. "I dont feel pressure but, still, I should score," Neymar said. After Piques seventh-minute opener got the Spanish champions going, Neymar used some masterful dribbling to throw off defender Efe Ambrose with his change of rhythm before cutting a pass back into the box for Pedro to direct home in the 40th. The Brazil forward was able to tap home his first goal since Nov. 10 four minutes later after Alexis Sanchez lifted a ball over Celtics defence to meet Marc Montoyas run, and the Spanish fullback slid it back for an easy goal. Neymar showed no problems handling Barcelonas slick combination capabilities as he backheeled to Xavi Hernandez who returned on to his run through the defence, and Neymar sent a rising shot into the corner as he slipped to the ground in the 48th. "I wouldnt say some players gave up but it certainly looked that way at times," said Celtic coach Neil Lennon. "A lot of half-hearted performances and, as a manager, that was the most disappointing aspect of the whole game." Ambrose was caught out again in the 58th. Neymars stepover created space before he used his other foot to slide the ball through the big defenders legs, get into the box and then beat Forster. Neymar nearly had a fourth in the 65th as he beat the offside trap to go in alone on Forster, only to dabble too long looking for a shot and his run collided with Pedro, who took a shot that was saved. Forster could only watch as Tello, who returned from injury to replace Sanchez, tried a shot that deflected high and into goal in the 72nd minute. "I hope, with this game tonight, that weve put to rest any doubts about our play," Pedro said. Barcelona, which rested Andres Iniesta, rebounded from a 2-1 loss to Ajax to finish top of the standings with 13 points. AC Milan also advanced after drawing 0-0 against Ajax to finish second. "Whats important is weve overcome two straight losses and that can change things for us as we concentrate on the league," Neymar said after taking his season goal tally to seven. DeMarcus Ware . GoranDragic scored 32 points in 32 minutes and the Suns routed the Knicks 112-88 on Friday night for their season-high sixth victory in a row. Derek Wolfe .Y. -- It wasnt supposed to end this way for senior C.When the word finally came out that Japanese star pitcher Masahiro Tanaka was being posted, I was convinced he would sign with the Texas Rangers or New York Yankees, with the LA Dodgers and Boston Red Sox being outside possibilities. Now if I had to make a wager, Id say the Seattle Mariners or Arizona Diamondbacks. Over the weekend, Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports suggested the Diamondbacks might be willing to trade their former closer J.J.Putz to the Yankees for IchiroSuzuki. Why, I wondered, would the Dbacks want a 40-year-old future Hall of Famer in the twilight of a great career? Then it hit me! What better way to convince Tanaka to sign with them than to offer him the chance to play with the greatest Japanese player of all time. But if its not just the money, Seattle is probably an even better choice for Tanaka. The Mariners have already shown a willingness to spend by luring free agent RobinsonCano away from the bright lights of New York and they already employ one of Tanakas best friends in baseball.HisashiIwakuma has quietly emerged as a star in Seattle the last two seasons. I say quietly because hell always be pitching in the shadow of "King Felix" Hernandez. In two years, though, hes put together a 23-11 record with a 2.84 ERA and 286 strikeouts. He made the American League all-star team last season but couldnt pitch in the mid-summer classic since he had made a start for Seattle on the Sunday, just before the Tuesday night game. He also finished third in Cy Young voting in the American League behind the Tigers MaxScherzer and the Rangers YuDarvish.Tanaka and Iwakuma were teammates with the Rakuten Golden Eagles in Japan from 2007 through 2011 and are reportedly good friends.Though Iwakuma put together a 107-69 record with a 2.75 ERA in Japan, he went through his share of adversities. In 2006, pitching motion rules were put into effect that forced Iwakuma to alter his delivery. In past, Japanese hurlers had been allowed to momentarily stop in mid-delivery before throwing to the plate. This was designed to throw off a hitters timing but now would simply be ruled a balk.Iwakuma changed, but altering his delivery led to shoulder problems and then elbow surgery that would cost him the bulk of two seasons.Iwakuma bounced back, though, and won the ERA title in 2008 as well as the Eiji Sawamura Award; the Major League equivalent of the Cy Young. Brock Osweiler. Even Iwakumas move to the Majors didnt go smoothly. Oakland won the bidding rights for him prior to the 2011 season. The sides couldnt come to terms on a contract, though, and Iwakuma wound up spending one more year in Japan before finally earning free agency at age 30 and signing with Seattle.Iwakuma will be 33 years old in April and would seem to be the perfect one to show Tanaka the ropes in the Majors. The only complication might be Iwakumas contract. He will be make $6.5 million with the Ms in 2014 and has a club option for $7 million in 2015. Tanaka could get close to twice that amount per season. That could be difficult for the Mariners to rationalize and explain to Iwakuma, whos already given them two very good seasons. Still, Ive got a feeling Seattle will find a way to get this done. The Tanaka negotiations must be completed by January 24 at 5:00 PM. Darvish took until the day before this deadline to sign with Texas. With spring training rapidly approaching, I can see this one getting done in the next week to ten days. Once Tanaka has a new home, it will only serve to intensify the bidding for free agents UbaldoJimenez, ErvinSantana, MattGarza and maybe even BronsonArroyo. The Class of 2014 inductees for the Baseball Hall of Fame will be announced on Wednesday at 2:00 PM. Im sticking with the same three selections I talked about months ago; Braves pitching legends GregMaddux and TomGlavine and White Sox two-time MVP, FrankThomas. I counted at least 10 other worthy Hall of Famers on this ballot, but thanks to PEDs and the sheer back-log of quality candidates, Im convinced only the aforementioned three will get in. As for Jack Morris, whos on the ballot for the 15th and final time, I dont care what his career ERA was; any man who was the staff ace on three World Series winners (84 Tigers, 91 Twins, 92 Blue Jays) belongs in the Hall of Fame - end of story. Check out Morriss numbers in 1992 with the Blue Jays at age 37. 240.2 innings pitched, 21-6 record, 4.04 ERA, six complete games and one shutout. Remember, the Blue Jays had Tom Henke and Duane Ward as the 1-2 punch in the pen. The onus wasnt on Morris to pitch that many innings or that many complete games. He just did, he was that good. GOODYEAR, Ariz. Rob Gronkowski Womens Jersey . -- Clevelands JasonGiambi will be sidelined for about three-to-four weeks with a broken rib in his right side. Giambi was hit by a pitch thrown by EdwinJackson of the Chicago Cubs in the third inning of a March 7 game. X-rays at the time were negative, but Cleveland said Thursday the 43-year-old Giambi had felt increased discomfort over previous five days. "As he continued to show tenderness, we got him an MRI yesterday," manager Terry Francona said. "We treat the symptoms. He will be down for a number of days without activity, just getting treatment. Then when the symptoms are better, we can start getting him into activities. Then we can get him into baseball activities." The 2000 AL MVP, Giambi is a non-roster invitee to big league training camp. The designated hitter hopes to play in his 20th major league season and second with the Indians. Giambi has been hit by 179 pitches during the regular season, 11th on the career list. "I kind of knew. It was a cutter in it hit me just under the pad," said Giambi, who picked the ball up and flipped the it to Jackson. "I didnt want him to think it hurt." Giambi probably will not make the opening-day roster, but the Indians are hoping he will rebound and be in position to join the big league team later. "It is why you try to evaluate everybody, because if you need a plan B or a plan C, you have it," Francona said. Giambi is optimistic he will be back soon. "Its not tragic. At least its not displaced," he said. "The doctors told me it is going to be sore and we have to get the trauma down. Guys play with this all the time. Im not discouraged. Its really small, but with the trauma it wont let me swing right now. Its the human body protecting itself." NyjerMorgan and JeffFrancoeur also are in camp on minor league contracts. Morgan strained his left calf Wednesday. "The trainers say day to day," Francona explained. "We have to protect him from himself. Hes kind of on a mission here if not to show us, to show the world hes back. He plays so hard. He has to pass some tests on the medical side. Thats not to hinder him. Thats to protect him." Right-hander J.C.Ramirez broke his left thumb and sprained a ligament during a "B" game on Tuesday against the Chicago White Sox and will be sidelined for eight-to-10 weeks. He is scheduled for surgery Monday with Dr. Thomas Graham at the Cleveland Clinic. James White Patriots Jersey . The Denver Nuggets versatile forward needs surgery to repair a labral tear in his left hip and is done for the season. Danny Amendola Womens Jersey . Inter president Erick Thohir says in a club statement on Wednesday that Vidic is "one of the worlds best defenders and his qualities, international pedigree, and charisma will be an asset.RALEIGH, N.C. -- The previous time the Carolina Hurricanes had a month like this, a rare playoff appearance soon followed. The Hurricanes capped their first 10-win month since 2009 by beating the St. Louis Blues 3-1 on Friday night. JeffSkinner scored the go-ahead goal in the second period, AlexanderSemin added an empty-netter with 1:04 left and NathanGerbe scored on an early power play. Opening a four-game homestand that precedes the Olympic break, Carolina earned its fifth win in six games while staying in the mix in the crowded Metropolitan Division. "We want to have a good feeling going into the break and we want to sort of build off this win," Skinner said. DavidBackes scored on the power play for St. Louis. The Blues, who average 3.36 goals per game, missed a chance to pull even with Chicago atop the Central Division by losing just their fourth game against an Eastern Conference team. "Hard to find a lot of good players in our game today," St. Louis coach Ken Hitchcock said. "They deserve a lot of credit. They skated. They checked. They played hard. And we looked like we had the body language like we wanted an easier game. Didnt get it." AntonKhudobin stopped 26 shots for the Hurricanes. JaroslavHalak made 28 saves in his fourth straight start, but had his four-game winning streak snapped. Khudobin stopped all 10 shots he faced in the third period, including a nifty leg save on AlexPietrangelo with about 1 1/2 minutes left. And, he got some help from the goal post after two Blues -- JadenSchwartz and JayBouwmeester -- each rang it in the final 2 minutes. "You need the post to be a goalies best friend," Carolina coach KirkMuller said. Semin then tacked on his highlight-reel empty-net goal that capped the Hurricanes best month in a while. They went 10-4 in January, and their previous 10-win month in March 2009 led into their only playoff apppearance since 2006, when they won their only Stanley Cup. Dan Connolly Patriots Jersey. Skinner put Carolina up 2-1 off a draw 1:51 into the second. After JordanStaal won a faceoff, the puck found Skinners stick and he beat Halak with a wrist shot from the slot that clipped the goalies glove for his seventh goal of the month. "Didnt really mean to bank it off his glove and in," Skinner said. "You just try and get it to the net sometimes." That turned out to be enough support for Khudobin, who earned the decision in every game this month for Carolina. He helped the Hurricanes leapfrog idle Columbus and Philadelphia in the division standings, with 59 points. When the night started, only 11 points separated second place from the cellar in the Metropolitan. The Hurricanes never trailed on Friday, taking advantage of some sloppy play early by the Blues -- who were whistled for three penalties in the opening 11:25. Carolina went up 1-0 when Gerbe one-timed a slick cross-ice pass from AndrejSekera 3:46 in. "The puck had moved, and there was an opening there and he found a soft area," Sekera said. "He was wide open, so I just tried to get it to him, and he did a pretty good job." The Blues, who have the leagues second-best power-play unit, tied it at 9:23 when Backes beat Khudobin high for his 150th career goal with St. Louis but just his second since Dec. 14. "Its nice to be back on the scoreboard but were more interested in winning," Backes said. "Tonight was a game where they brought a hard-skating, tough-checking game, and we didnt have a ton of answers for it." NOTES: St. Louis finished the month 9-5-0. ... The Blues entered with 37 points on the road, the second-best total in the league, but have not won in Raleigh since 2009. ... Carolina G CamWard, out all of January with an unspecified lower-body injury, made a conditioning start Friday night with Charlotte of the AHL. ' ' '

Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn. Dan Marino Dolphins Jersey .ca! Hi Kerry!I hope you saw that attempt by JoffreyLupul to elbow HenrikSedin in the head on Saturday, but missed and took out NazemKadri. I just wanted to find out if the NHL has a rule against attempts to injure players. Im sure a running elbow would be a concussion or something serious had Lupul hit his intended target. The refs are not doing enough to protect the players, this went uncalled! Thanks,Adrian Wong---Hi Kerry,Been wondering about JoffreyLupuls attempted elbow to the head of HenrikSedin in the Canucks win over the Maple Leafs.Lupul clearly attempts to use his elbow to hit Sedin as he is flying by him. Sedin dodges it, and it takes a bad turn for the Leafs as he hits Kadri instead. With this, I have two questions:1. Does Lupuls failure to hit Sedin clear him of everything, or does his obvious attempt to injure stay with him?2. If it doesnt clear him, why is this hit not being looked at by the league, especially with Lupul having a previous suspension? Thanks,Ben Arends---Hi Kerry,I was watching the Leafs-Canucks game and completely missed this occurrence. I couldnt believe that this attempt at Sedin was not even brought up by most news operations. Even though Lupul didnt connect, should this attempt to elbow Sedins head not be a suspension or at least be reviewed? To me, it clearly looks like Lupul was attempting to head Sedin in the head. Yes, he didnt connect, but the attempt to connect was there. I would be interested in your thoughts. Jay---Hi Kerry,In the Toronto/Vancouver game Saturday, Lupul extends his elbow with the intent of hitting HenrikSedin. Henrik luckily ducks out of the way and Lupul ends up elbowing Kadri instead. Yes, it was a very amusing outcome (perhaps not for Kadri), but this makes me question why the NHL does not use rule 21.1 (Match Penalty) to punish these types of plays when it is clear that Lupuls intent was to strike HenrikSedin in the head and only because Hank saw it coming, was it avoided.Seems to me like the NHL waits for a significant injury instead of ever punishing the intent. Can you explain this to me? Can you explain why we have a rule that allows refs to punish intent, but it never gets used? Thanks,Steve PlattAdrian, Ben, Jay and Steve: We have another full mail bag today on a potentially very dangerous play. This time we examine JoffreyLupuls deliberate flying elbow intended for HenrikSedins head. The forceful elbow narrowly missed the mark but instead caught Lupuls teammate NazemKadri flush in the kisser. No call was made on the ice. First, let me offer my perspective concerning the lack of a penalty being assessed on the play (video link). In most cases there needs to be some form of contact for the Referee to assess a penalty. I can therefore understand why one wasnt forthcoming on this play. Elbowing, kneeing and most other fouls come to mind where a narrow miss becomes a non-event and therefore not worthy of a penalty. Slashing on the other hand is the act of a player swinging his stick at an opponent, whether contact is made or not. Other exceptions to this standard of contact are when a player attempts to butt-end or spear his opponent. In these cases a double minor is assessed when no contact is made and a major plus game misconduct results from contact. In the previous two fouls a match penalty is assessed when injury results. The reason for these applications is the inherent danger to a players safety when struck with a stick. We also now recognize the potential for serious injury when an elbow cap is forcefully delivered to the head of an opponent. A number of suspensions have resulted from these types of illegal hits. In all cases the parameters and criteria change when an infraction is deemed to be an attempt to injure an opponent. In this particular situation, even with the absence of contact but given the deliberation and severity of the attempt JoffreyLupul made to elbow HenrikSedin in the head a different standard must apply. I want to specifically reference rule 45.4 which I believe should have been applied by the Officials at ice level; "The Referee, at his discretion, may assess a match penalty if, in his judgment, the player attempted to or deliberately injured his opponent by elbowing." The decision JoffreyLupul made to leave his feet and fully extend his elbow at his opponents head was beyond just tremendously irresponsible but one he should know would result in some degree of injury to Sedin. Just because Sedin veered from his original path behind the goal and cut hard toward the front of the net does not excuse Lupuls subsequent actions with some separation as an attempt to simply make a check. The evidence here clearly demonstrates that HenrikSedin narrowly avoided the intended contact to his head by looking down at the puck in his skates and thereby altering his head position. Lupul did not let up after missing Sedin and accidentally planted the elbow in the face of NazemKadri. Striking HenrikSedin would have been no accident! I look at this play similarly to a player swinging a stick at the head of his opponent from close range but where no contact was made. Without question I would assess a match penalty for "attempt to injure." I would hope every Referee would do the same. I recall giving Chris Knuckles Nilan a match penalty after assuming his position in the penalty box following a fight, then grabbing a puck out of the bucket and throwing it at his opponent seated in the visitors penalty box. The puck missed Knucks intended target but it was still an attempt to injure! The Player Safety Committee on the other hand has a more challenging task to suspend a player where no contact or adverse result occurred given the standard they have set to this point in their deliberations. I can only imagine the fallout from a team and the NHLPA if a player was suspended without physical evidence of contactthe smoking gun. The primary objectives of supplemental discipline are to hold players accountable for poor and dangerous decisions in an effort to provide player safety and ultimately prevent future injuries. While proving "intent" can be a very difficult task, the overwhelming evidence on this play can only lead a reasonable thinking person to conclude that JoffreyLupul fully intended on elbowing HenrikSedin in the head. There have been many times that the Player Safety Committee has suspended a player where no injury resulted. I cant think of one situation where a player was suspended where contact with his opponent did not actually occur. The reality is that this play was likely judged in the same consistent fashion given the absence of physical contact. Any lack of supplemental discipline in cases such as this not only sends the wrong message but misses the intended target completely; namely to provide a future deterrent to a player committing an illegal and dangerous act where injury is likely to result. Portugal could still pull level with Russia in next weeks last qualifiers but the Russians have scored seven more goals than the Portuguese, giving them the decisive edge. WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. -- Saints owner Tom Benson has been treated and released from a hospital after he had trouble breathing while watching practice. Team spokesman Greg Bensel says the 87-year-old Benson is "fine" after being given oxygen. Bensel says doctors at a hospital in Lewisburg put Benson through a series of tests and "did not find any issues or complications." Bensel says Benson apparently has struggled with the altitude and dehydration at times during training camp in the Allegheny Mountains.Michael Egnew Womens Jersey.
