"Were gutting things out. Were better defensively than we were a month ago, were better rebounding than we were a month ago." No Spartans team before this one started with 17 wins in its first 18 games. The shot at that served as motivation, said Denzel Valentine, who had a game-high 11 rebounds and 15 points. "We kept saying, Lets make history," he said. While Michigan State won its 10th straight, Illinois (13-6, 2-4) has now lost four in a row. The frustration was apparent during several loud exchanges between coach John Groce and officials. The last one earned him a technical foul. But Groce said Michigan State was just better. Attempting to forecast how this team will do is fruitless.� A MLS season is a marathon to begin with, never mind the added wrinkle of this summers World Cup.� Notwithstanding injuries and/or factors out of the realm of control, here are three keys to success for Toronto FC in 2014. 1) Goal scoring: Bezbatchenko has said to anyone who will listen; his first job was to find TFC goal scorers.� Sounds simplistic but only one team scored fewer goals than TFC last season.� Toronto has been in the bottom five in goals scored in each of the last four years.� The lack of a true finisher outside of the oft-injured Danny Koevermans was an indictment on team management.� Without top goal scorers there is next to no chance of competing with the top sides and having regular success.� It has been one of the many reasons for perennial failure to date.� How many goals Defoe, Gilberto, and De Rosario will score will determine how far this team will go.� Gilberto has already set a lofty, most likely unattainable goal of 25 tallies this season.� Defoe should have little trouble adapting to MLS life, and 20 goals isnt out of the question.� TFC lost back-up strike option Bright Dike through pre-season injury, Dike would have played a key role.� Bezbatchenko would be prudent to bring in another goal scorer to compliment the bunch because you can never have enough goals in the team. 2) Back four: Cheap goals conceded have plagued TFC in recent seasons.� The group last year was far too young, inexperienced and mistake prone.� The group worked hard, but lacked cohesion and didnt do anything particular well.� Justin Morrrow and Bradley Orr were brought in to add experience to the back-line. Jake Arrieta Jersey. .� The strength, or lack thereof, of this young group will make or break this team.� Cesar as a leader at the back helps, as does Steven Caldwell as a steady, vocal force.� Can Nelsen get this group playing as a unit?� Does TFC have enough quality depth?� And can young Canadians Doneil Henry and Ashton Morgan makes strides, finding consistency in their game? If the answer to these questions is yes, TFC will be in good stead. Age is no longer an excuse. 3) Team tactics: Nelsens first year as manager was a trying one.� With very little talent, depth and a revolving door, six wins and the third worst points total in the league (29) was a predictable outcome.� Evaluation of Nelsen as team manager is thus far incomplete.� It surprised some Nelsen remained in the off-season of top-to-bottom change.� And because of that, he remains the easy fall-guy in case all doesnt go according to plan.� Another coaching change is the last thing this team needs - eight coaches in eight years speaks to the lack of vision or consistent direction.� Players, no matter how good, cannot achieve in a current state of flux.� It must be said the work-rate of the team under Nelsen was superior.� Theres no question hes a natural leader and a well-liked figure.� His man-management and tactical approach will be tested now he has better players and a year under his belt.� The team generally lined up in a 4-4-2 last year.� A level of formational flexibility will be required to get the most out of his assets, particularly finding the best spots to play De Rosario and Gilberto as dynamic attacking players. As a biology graduate from the University of New Hampshire and an aspiring physician, Hinds began taking part in medical research internship at McMaster University Hospital last year. His is studying something called pectus excavatum, a congenital deformity of the anterior wall of the chest. Its not your typical off-field activity for a professional football player, but then there arent many CFL players who aspire to a career in medicine after football (Hinds says when he takes medical literature on Tiger-Cat road trips during the season, theres rarely a fight with teammates for his reading material). So when one of the doctors at McMaster was putting together a project to raise money for pediatric facilities in Guyana, he approached Hinds because of his interest in pediatric medicine and his connection to the country. "When they asked me to be the face of this project I was overwhelmed because it sounded huge," said Hinds, who was raised in Toronto. The doctor (Brian Cameron) does a lot of work with Guyana so what he had in mind was to help the pediatric ward because often it gets left to the last. So the whole idea is to get the pediatric ward to where it should be." When he arrived in Guyana, Hinds was taken to meet the countrys president, Donald Ramotar. Part of the trip was to open a neonatal intensive care unit which had been funded by efforts led by a Canadian doctor, Dr. Narendra Singh, who founded Guyana Help the Kids. Seeing the fruits of that project gave Hinds hope that his efforts to create a new pediatric ward can drastically improve conditions in his former home country. Seeing the state of things in Guyana would have been jarring to anyone. But his personal connection to the country made it hit home especially hard. "You identify with people because Im from there," he said. "It gives you motivation that it somehow has to get done." To that end, Hinds is holding a dinner this Sunday, April 22, at the Workers Art and Heritage Centre in Hamilton, aimed at raising awareness about the project and form a small working group directed at larger fundraising efforts. He is putting up most of the money, with the city kicking in $200 million from a hotel tax. "I think Atlanta is a natural fit for Major League Soccer," said Blank, who was serenaded by a burgeoning fan group that calls itself "Terminus Legion," a reference to the citys former name. The teams name has not been determined. Blank said he will get input from the fans before deciding on the new moniker, though he already knows the colours: red and black -- matching the Falcons -- with a substantial amount of gold as well. "What the name will be, we really dont know," he said. "We will spend a lot of time listening to our fans and trying to understand why some names are more important than others, why certain designs are more important than others, why certain logos are more important than others." One name that wont be considered: Atlanta Chiefs, the name of two previous teams that played in the old North American Soccer League. While the Chiefs won the first NASL championship in 1968, both versions struggled financially and eventually folded. MLS Commissioner Don Garber said there was no hesitation about putting a team in Atlanta once Blank worked out a stadium deal. It is the ninth-largest metropolitan area in the U.S. and the biggest without a top-level soccer team. "This is something that will help elevate our league," Garber said. "It will also elevate our sport in the entire Southeast, which is something that is very important to us strategically." "Were thinking about it all the time, and Rick reminds us all the time to get it out of the way," Jimmie Johnson said. "Man, weve been all around it, and have had a lot of shots at it this year. ... We had one through three locked up there at the end of Martinsville, and felt like that was the day for it to happen." But the special bookend for Hendricks 200th victory didnt happen after Clint Bowyers aggressive move on a late restart took out front-runners Johnson and Jeff Gordon. The Oklahoma City Thunder needed every point from their top reserve to win yet another overtime game against Memphis. Jackson scored a personal playoff-best 32 points, and the Thunder beat the Grizzlies 92-89 Saturday night, tying up their first-round Western Conference series at two apiece. "Reggie played an outstanding basketball game," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "He was able to attack and finish around the rim like hes done all year, and I knew he would bounce back ... Hes done a great job of coming in and giving us that lift offensively when we needed it as a sixth man." The Thunder sure needed him to avoid going back home in a 3-1 hole after three straight overtime games. Jackson had only scored 15 points combined in this series, but the guard shook off his shooting woes by hitting 11 of 16. Durant and Russell�Westbrook, who struggled through their worst scoring game of the series with a combined 11 of 45 and 15 points apiece. He said a few made layups finally got him going. Jackson said Durant and Westbrook were allowing him to play. "They told me to just keep going and be aggressive," Jackson said. The Thunder blew a 14-point lead with Memphis, and the Grizzlies blew a third straight fourth-quarter lead themselves. Jackson tied up Memphis with five straight points in the final minute of regulation, and he hit all six free throws in overtime as the Thunder survived an extra period with seven lead changes. "Theyre running plays for him with Durant and Westbrooks spaced out," Memphis coach Dave Joerger said. "If youre going down, my hats off to them, both guys did a great job, and Reggie�Jackson did a great job just being in attack mode." Durants two free throws with 1:02 left in overtime put the Thunder ahead to stay. "One of the things I was pleased about was the way Russ and KD took a backseat tonight and let Reggie take over," Thunder centre Kendrick�Perkins said. "That says a lot about them also." Game 5 is Tuesday night back in Oklahoma City. Mike�Conley missed a 26-footer just before the buzzer that could have forced a second extra period. Oklahoma Citys Serge�Ibaka also blocked a Tony�Allen shot with 2.7 seconds left in regulation to keep the Thunder alive for overtime. The Thunder won for only the second time in seven playoff games in Memphis, and this was just their second in eight overtimes with the Grizzlies since the start of the 2010-11 season. Oklahoma City also snapped Memphis franchise-record 15-game winning streak. Ibaka added 12 points for Oklahoma City. The Thunder outrebounded Memphis 58-49 and got 12 offensive rebounds in the fourth quarter and overtime combined. Marc�Gasol led Memphis with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Allen had 14 points and 13 rebounds, Conley had 14 points and Zach�Randolph added 11. Gasol said he expects the Grizzlies will be more aggressive with Jackson in the next game. But he also noted they have to do better against the likes of Ibaka and Caron�Butler. "Those are the guys that are going to be the difference in the series," Gasol said. The Grizzlies blew a fourth-quarter lead for a third straight game. They last led 87-86 after Conley hit a step-back jumper. Then Duran hit two free throws with 1:02 left to put the Thunder ahead to stay, and Jackson sealed it with four free throws in the final 12.2 seconds. With NBA commissioner Adam Silver and former Oklahoma and Dallas Cowboys coach Barry Switzer on hand, the Thunder got back to passing the ball and shooting better with the exception of Durant and Westbrook. Oklahoma City took its biggest lead of the game at 64-50 on a layup by Durant with 26.3 seconds left in the third. Then the Grizzlies put together their best stretch with a 15-5 spurt with Memphis coach Dave Joerger going with a small group of shooters including Mike�Miller, Beno�Udrih and Conley. Miller hit a 3-pointer that brought fans to their feet, and Allens layup off his own miss with 3:55 gave the Grizzlies their first lead since 20-18 early in the second quarter. But they couldnt hold the lead on a day where former owner Michael Heisley died at the age of 77.
